okay, I'm thinking about buying a second car for a bit of fun.

Want something a bit different.... maybe rwd or turbo'd etc..

Budget of 2k and I don't mind having to fix it, so has anyone got suggestions?

Oh yeah, nothing newer than a 1990ish

Neither RWD or turbo'd - but what about a MkI VW Golf GTI? Go for the 1982-1984 model with the twin headlights.

    Maybe an Audi Quattro.....................

2K might not be enough though.

Too new to be retro, imo. Maybe I'm just too old...............

MX5 - nice car all the same.

I'll second that. Needs to be pretty bad to be got within budget though

Retro by segment! Mazda brought us back the small convertible sports cars that were so popular in the 60s and had long since vanished

Agreed, my plan is for a MKII GTi which I'd hope to rebuild over a while.. I love the idea of making a project out of it :)

Budget may be higher, depending on the car I guess. Don't want to spend much on a "Sunday Car".

Had considered a mk1 golf gti, they can be picked cheap in the UK. I'll check out tatty mx5s too.

Make sure you get a 16v - so much better.

OP - What about a VW Corrado? I don't know how they'll fit your budget but they are a cool car.

I think the 8 valve Mk 2 GTI is a better car tbh, so much so I have 6 of them. The 16 valve was quicker but the 8 valve had a higher top speed and wasn't as troublesome. Brilliant cars though.

Interesting add, the reg looks like an old irish reg, 444 BZO, but the add claims it's a 1987 which should have the new style reg.

Or could it be a personalised UK reg? Very rare over here to find an original V12 XJS.

Or is it a typo? The current Irish reg system was introducted in 1987.

As far as I remember BZO is around a 1981 reg.

Saab 900 turbo ( old model, made up till 93 ). Not rwd, but has a turbo :) Loads and loads of character, and its certainly different. I've seen maybe 10-15 of them in Ireland in the last year. I have 2, and happen to be selling one, but I'll not go so far as giving the link, its probably against the rules to even refer to a sale.

It is an Irish registration plate, because cartell.ie knows it :)

I agree with ya. It probably is a typo as in it's an '86 and not an '87 car

The 8v doesn't have a higher top speed than the 16v. I had a German 16v (with cat, so only 129ps), and that would cruise all day at its top speed of 200km/h. An Irish 16v would be faster again, as they had no cats and therefore 139ps.

I drove an 8 valve Golf Gti for three years and used to race a 16 valve belonging to a friend of mine and he could never outrun me but I could never out accelerate him, both cars were unmodified. My car had a higher top speed than his. I'm only speaking from experience, I'm not an anorak when it comes statistics Anan1, life's too short tbh.:)

8V was never faster than 16V in standard form. Not topend or acceleration.

Didnt see this post - was reading top down.

I had 2 x 16V and use to run away from 8V in most cases ....either way. My SAAB Viggen does me well now.

In my experience of driving a 16v at Vmax for extended periods over two years, it has a noticeably higher top speed than an 8v. No anoraks, no statistics, just my experience.;)

Agreed. I used to belong to the VW Club of South Africa. We raced 16V in a higher class than 8V. Unless the cars were modded - a standard 16V would generally run away from an 8V in most cases. My 1.8 16V would be in the same class as the 2.0 8V and were fairly well matched (standard).

The 16V is a lot faster than the 8V in every way. It is the last Golf I fancied :)

Looking for compliments, junkyard? Ah go on then, the logical explanation is that you're a better driver than your friend :p

 I thought all German cars had cats for about 20 years now?
