News just out today is that the RTL Group & MTV Networks in Germany have signed contracts with Astra that will lead to the encryption of all their channels on 19.2° in 2007.

Lets hope the German Cartel office do something about it...

Plans are to charge their satellite viewers €3.50 a month.
DVB-T encryption plans do not officially exist.

    oh dear...

Since many MTV and RTL channels on 19E are encrypted this sounds real. However they may change their mind when no Germans pay it. The Germans have a track record of only paying for really premium pay TV.

IMO Most RTL and all MTV are eminently missable.

...no RTL Germany channels on 19E are encrypted, only ones run by other divisions of the firm.

ARD & ZDF released a joint and seriously worded statement about this today, stating that its just them trying to start a full PayTV platform, not an 'interactive TV one'.

No RTL German channels are encrypted -yet-
But then again, it is still only 2006.

They are defenitely not encrypted yet :-) - they are planning it for the 1st half 2007 and you'll need new hardware too (yet another settop box). I can't see the Germans go for it just for the sake of a few channels, even if the Sat1/Pro7 group get on board too as is rumoured
