    Dear Boss

It’s been over a year since my last work review and I would like to setup one in the next couple of weeks to find out how I’m getting on from your point of view.

During the review I would like to talk about some of the following:

    • Work Review

Over the past year I fell that I have worked to the best of my ability. I have always done my best to meet deadlines and when required extra time and effort have been give to jobs in order that they are completed in time.

I also applied myself in the same manner while working in Scott Wilson, which at times didn’t have the best of work atmospheres.

I would like any comments that you may have n this you are not happy with, this you fell I could improve on and any general advice you may have for me.

    • CPD

I am considering doing a diploma in Highway & Geotechnical Engineering in Trinity next summer. Details can be found if you click on link.

From working in Scott Wilson I have developed an interest in road engineering and feel that this combined with my experience with drainage maybe an ideal combination.

Would My Company be able to offer anything towards the course and if they were now much would it be and what terms and conditions would apply?

There are other courses coming up run by the I.E.I such as road design and courses run by Mirco Drainage regarding Win Des and I would also like to be considered for these

    • Salary Review

In last year I learned how to use new software including Autorack, ARCADDY, OSCADDY, and PICADDY. As it currently stands I am the only person in the My Company Dublin Office who is competent in using the above programs.

I have also taken on new responsibilities when I took over looking after the IT side of things when the IT Guy left and as a result have been working longer hours in order to fit my engineering responsibilities with my new IT responsibilities.

I would like any salary review to take into account the points made above.

    • Bonus

At Christmas we were told that a bonus would be paid during the summer but to date this still hasn’t paid.

I have recently bought an apartment and had planned to put any bonus towards the deposit. Are we still being paid a bonus and if so when will it be paid?

I am extremely happy working at My Company and would like to arrange the review as soon as possible to the satification of both parties in order to continue the relationship.

    Regards,

    Kearnsr

Gona send this to my boss tomorrow. Any one got any tips or things they might change

Reads very well. Just have some general comments on spelling etc:

    "Email v Letter"

Seems like you are sending this as an email. For greater impact, i would send it in letter form (and attach the TCD course info). People still tend to give greater attention to letters, rather than emails.

    "Dear Boss"

maybe you left the name out on purpose because this is a public forum, but obviously you should address this to him/her personally.

under "work review" just some spelling errors in this sentence:

"I would like any comments that you may have n this you are not happy with, this you fell I could improve on and any general advice you may have for me."

Presume you want to change it to:

"I would like any comments that you may have on this that you are not happy with, or that you feel I could improve on, and any general advice you may have for me."

    once again under "work review"

"I also applied myself in the same manner while working in Scott Wilson, which at times didn’t have the best of work atmospheres."

up to you, but maybe leave out the bit about bad work atmospheres. You could bring this up in the meeting, but no need to have it in print.

remove the word "now" (highlighted) from the following sentence, it doesn't fit into the flow of the sentence.

"Would My Company be able to offer anything towards the course and if they were now much would it be and what terms and conditions would apply?"

under "salary review". Can you definitely support the highlighted part of the following statement? If there is someone else who feels they are competent in any of these, they might feel a bit slighted (i'm sure it isn't an issue for you, but i made the same claim myself to a previous boss, and someone who felt they were as competent got a bit pissed off!).

"In last year I learned how to use new software including Autorack, ARCADDY, OSCADDY, and PICADDY. As it currently stands I am the only person in the My Company Dublin Office who is competent in using the above programs."

    under "bonus":

"At Christmas we were told that a bonus would be paid during the summer but to date this still hasn’t paid.

I have recently bought an apartment and had planned to put any bonus towards the deposit. Are we still being paid a bonus and if so when will it be paid?"

maybe rearrange it to be a bit 'softer', i.e. remove the "this still hasn't been paid yet" bit, and have it read something like:

"At Christmas we were told that a bonus would be paid during the summer. Are we still being paid a bonus and if so when will it be paid?

I have recently bought an apartment and had planned to put any bonus towards the deposit."

Overall, i like the letter. It puts you in a good light, and i think the boss will read it from a positive perspective.

As a final thing. And this is very very nit-picking of me. But, you are quite sparse on your use of commas!

Just as a general rule; if a sentence has a natural break in it, then it should have a comma to denote that natural break. (e.g. this last sentence).

Having said that, i constantly find myself having to go back over my writing to remove excess commas, so i'm probably not a good person to be giving this advice.

This is a point bordering on an absurd level of miniscule usefulness, so feel absolutely free to ignore it!

    Thanks for all the replies.

All names have been taken out. I will actually be sending this to two bosses and I will be adressing this to them rather than to the "boss".

As for the english I'm usless at that. Have sent this to a friend who is decent with english and I'll correct them kinda things. English was never my strong point and thats why I'm an egineer!

Also continuing with the nit picking you typed "fell" instead of "feel" at least twice. Maybe check that out. Spellcheck doesnt pick those ones up.

My engineering/poet friedn gave me this
    Dear Boss

It’s been over a year since my last work review and I would like it if we could arrange such a meeting in the next couple of weeks. Primlarily so we can assess how we feel I'm coming along and developing in my roles.

During the review I would like to discuss some of the following topics :

    Work Review

Over the past year I feel that I have worked to the best of my ability. I have always done my best to meet deadlines and when required extra time and effort have been give to jobs in order that they are completed in time.

I also applied myself in the same manner while working in Company 2.

I would appreciate feedback on my work to date so far with Company Name - inparticular, areas where you feel I have room for improvement and further development.

    CPD

I am currently considering enrolling in a diploma in Highway & Geotechnical Engineering hosted at Trinity next summer. Further details can be found , if interested, by clicking on this link.

My time working with Company 2 fostered an interest in road engineering . I feel that this combined with my experience of drainage may be a practical and beneficial combination , both personally and for the company.

Would Company Name be willing to offer any supplementation of cost of the course? If this is the case, how much would this be and what conditions , if any, would apply ?

There are other courses coming up run by the I.E.I. such as road design and courses run by Mirco Drainage regarding Win Des and I would also like to be considered for these

    Salary Review

In last year I learned how to use new software including Autorack, ARCADDY, OSCADDY, and PICADDY. As it stands , I am the only person in the My Company Dublin Office who is competent in using the above programs.

Recently I have also taken on new responsibilities when It GUy left in taking over looking after the IT functioning of the office. As a result , I have been working longer hours in order to accomodate both my my role as engineer and my new IT responsibilities.

I would appreciate it if we could discuss these developments when we meet to review my salary.

    Bonus

At Christmas , we were informed that we would receive a bonus sometime in the summer months. However, to date this has been no remuneration nor any mention of said.

I have recently taken on financial obligations by way of a mortgage and had intended to put any bonus received towards the deposit. Can you comment of if and when a bonus will be received?

I am very satisfied with my time and work at My Company and would like to arrange the review as soon as possible , so that the satification of both parties can be guaranteed.

    Regards,

    Kearnsr

Probably go with this or a combo of both

Hi Kearnsr, while the above advice is very good indeed, I hope you will also take on board what I have to say, if not now, maybe for the future.

As I read through what you are going to send to your boss, it seemed very familiar to me. Without going into too many details, in my experience:

    1) If 'Your Boss' tells you that you will receive a bonus or salary review and then you don't, well it is probably his/her intention not to give it to you for whatever reason
    2) If you have to ask for a meeting like this then again in my experience the company or 'Your Boss' is not really doing their job very well
    3) You should ask with less of a 'you will be doing me a favour' type of attitude and more like 'I think I'm worth it' attitude.

I left a long term job because of some of the issues that you are raising after years of being 'put to the back of the queue' so to speak and it is only now that I'm in a company that have proper policies and procedures in place that I realise how badly I was treated in the past.

If you learn nothing more from my reply, please please don't be afraid to move on if you are not happy with the outcome of your meeting. The career that you have chosen is a promising one and one that requires intelligence and skill - make sure that the company you work for appreciates this.

    Good luck! :)

Just my (inexperienced) opinion, but I think you are portrayed much better in the last draft you posted, through more careful use of proposition and self appraisal, and the use of firm, yet polite, suggestive language. It is more impressive than the first imo.

Just one thing though, wouldnt it be better if you knew the companies name, and dont call the IT guy "IT Guy"...

Dont sign off as kearnser either:D
    j/k

Don't mention the apartment purchase. What you do with your money is entirely irrelevant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

On the contrary, I would mention it. Lets the boss know that he's planning his money and needs the company to come good on its promises to him, as well as reducing the "coldness" of the letter.

Overall, I think it's a good one OP, shows you in a very positive light. Make sure you can back it up though, and have responses for any negative points you might expect them to bring up to counter your requests..

It's entirely irrelevant and unprofessional. Even if OP is planning on pi$$ing the money down a pub toilet, or blowing it on a mad weekend in Vegas, he is still entitled to his bonus. If OP's work buddy needs it more (e.g. he's just had his 4th kid and is living in a slum), should the entire budget for bonuses go to the work buddy instead?
