How would I go about creating an account so I can access my machine without connecting to the network?

I have admin access on the machine so I can create accounts but I can only log in via the domain where my account is, if you know what I mean.

Running XP pro service pack 2

    This is at work\college?

Depending on the computers domain policy, it would well be set up to create all user accounts on the DC. It may not be possible for you to create a truely local account at all.

This is at work, Im pretty sure I can create the account because a lot of people take their laptops home at the end of the day.

Im just tired of crawling around under the table with network cables everytime I want to switch from laptop to desktop.

When I try to add the account I use my username in the username field and the computer name in the domain field, I get the error - user could not be added to group because user does not exist.

Normally on Windows active directory domains, the PC's will cache 10 or so previous logons, so that you can log on without having a network connection. At the logon screen, drop down the "log on to" menu and select the local computer name instead of the domain name.

If your domain admins are a bit paranoid about security, they may have set a group policy to cache no previous logons, requiring connectivity to a domain controller every time you log on.

Though I had it there, good old password root. But no.

The laptop was just recloned so even if it does cache the logons the cache would be empty.

Odd though, I logged in under the usual domain with no connection there. Might have been a fluke though because I just pulled out the network cable.

Ehh, I have a few ideas. But they revolve around you having Network Admin rather than Local machine Admin. This would be a job for the IT division where you work Tbh.

right click my computer choose manage

    choose local users and groups

enter users and create a new user

add the new user to the local administrators group
