Guys..I am upgrading from 10.3 to 10.4 -- good news im sure you'll all agree...
anyway, i have an offer of getting 10.4, but its a G5 install disk thats never been registered, i run an iBook G4, its going cheap this G5 install...about 30 euro..its never been registered etc...so it should be fine??

The other one is disk that a guy on the FS forum is selling, its more expensive but its not an install disk for a G5..

    so..my question:

will there be a problem with the G5 disk for installation on to my ibook?
which one would you guys go for, considering the non G5 is more expensive..?

    thks again, my mac gurus!

It should work fine. You don't have to register OS X, unless I'm horribly mistaken.

The G5 disk should work fine. However, the disk is worth exactly €0 as it is not for a G4 iBook.

Technically, its not licenced for the iBook. Doesn't stop people mind you, but registered or not, its not legit for use on your iBook G4.

how do you mean its worth 0?
im not going to sell it on or anything, as long as it works fine im happy ...which it should?

Yes supercomputer is quite right,a bag of rice has more value to you than that disk... you do not register the disk but the OS itself... my guess is that the dude with the g5 is trying to make a few extra bucks as technically that disk/licence has been used.. so its a bum deal there.. As a point of reference the disks supplied with any system are not for resale full stop.

You said that someone offered it to you for €30. If you are using the disk on a G5 then it's worth money (thats debatable, but at least it comes under fair use), but since you are using it on a G4 its worthless in monetary terms.

Im 85% sure it will work, but the point I am making is that you are paying €30 for unlicenced software, which is effectively worthless.

I do realise I am being awfully pedantic here and that in the real world Apple so far have been fairly laxed about licencing for OS X. Not sure how long that will last however.

Basically what I am saying is that if you are willing to use unlicenced software, fair enough, but don't pay for it!

Im 85% sure it will work, but...

In previous releases, I was under the impression that platform-specific installers didn't always work in machines for which they weren't intended.

I may be worng (but I may be right)

If it was the DVD that was included with the G5, it won't work, as it's going to include tools and software specifically for the computer it came with.

Anyway, if you want to pirate Mac OS X, go right ahead and download it off BitTorrent or somewhere, but don't pay for it.

Edit: Just to make this clear, I do not in any way, shape or form condone pirating Mac OS X. However, if you are hell bent on doing so, at least don't pay somebody to do it. Personally, I would consider purchasing a MacBook. If you're a student at the moment you get 160 euros off an iPod, on top of the normal student discount, and it comes with all the latest software (Tiger, iLife '06, etc). Might be worth looking into.

the G5 disc definitely wont work on an ibook, you either need the ibook version or the generic tiger install discs. you will only get an error for your 30 bucks if you buy it.

didn't work for me either. i tried using my tiger install disks from my macmini on a powerbook which had panther. no joy. just an error message. :(

    thanks guys...
it doesnt look good though on the upgrade front...
i tried to lift my keyboard (i have done this loads of time) and it looks like one of the buttons is broken, meaning i wont be able to get in at the RAM socket...which is bad news...
so another question! how the hell can i fix that problem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

meh, the keyboard is flexible, with a bit of tugging it should come free.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭adonis

yeah i have never had a problem before, but you know the little clip beside F1?
well its stuck or something and i noticed a little crack on the key itself, i dont want to break the whole keyboard if i pull it out!
would u believe i broke a nail trying to fix it?
    owwww

Try to use an old ATM or CC to wedge the keyboard out. If you can, stick a sewing needle into the hole and try to retract the pin holing the keyboard on.

If it all fails, you can always get a replacement keyboard off ebay.

    hey
is that the hole beside f5?

ill give the other things a shot when i get home...
    thks

On older models (lombard, pismo) there is a locking screw at the back of the machine - do you have one of these on the iBook?

    hc

    yeah
there is a steel hole on the back in the middle, i guess thats the one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

there are no screws holding in the keyboard on any of the "white" iBooks. There is a lock in the centre of the keyboard at the top, thats all.
