    Spotted this on another forum:http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=191593
Interested to see what ye think:
After reading and reading what seems like hundreds of pages about Windows Vista I have come to one conclusion for us gamers:

Microsoft is screwing us.....but what's new with that?

    Lets see:

-No SLI or Crossfire under Vista because it won't let GPUs send info to each other
-It seems to be a total resource hog once you enable any of the "new" features, especially "Aero Glass"
-There will be no DX10 in the standard (Home) retail build
-The new file system won't be included in the standard retail build

So why then should someone want to change over to Vista?

DX10 won't be compatible with Windows XP!!! Give me a break!!! So if we want to play DX10 games we will have to switch not only to a DX10 graphics card which can't be SLI'd or Crossfired but we will have to switch our entire OS.

Is this wrong info? If so, please someone clear it up for me.

If it is the right info, am I the only one pissed about MS turning a blind eye to us gamers and just dangling a carrot attached to a string in front of us?

While on the topic, is vista, dx10, and a dx10 graphics card needed to play cysis? or can you run on XP, with dx10, on a dx9 card???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

Dx10 is not compatible with Xp at all.

I've got to go out, but there is so much wrong information in that post, the poster is an idiot, the only true bit is that dx10 is only for Vista (all Vista), and its backwards compatible. Crysis afaik is also going to run on dx9, the only Dx10 only game so far is Halo2

How can it be "backwards compatible" if it only runs on Vista?

What i thought, but i'm not that well up on vista. just wanted it cleared up. How much of it is actually true? will Xfire not work?

Dx10 will be backwards compatible with dx9 ie. games built for dx10 will run on dx9 as far as i know.

Halo 2 wont need dx10, but it will need vista, ie. If you have vista, and a dx10 card, you could still run h2 in dx9, or even with a dx9 card afaik.

    1 Million Dollars.

Halo2 will need dx10/vista to run, dx10 will not need a card that supports all its features to be installed, just like you can have dx9 installed on a card that only supports up to dx8.

As for SLI/Crossfire, the only thing holding them back is that the drivers have to be fully developed, there is 0 chance that Vista will stop them from working. What you might be getting confused with is the new Intel 965 boards which currently don't support crossfire as they don't support card to card transfers like the nforce/ati/975 chipsets.

Vista right now is quite slow, mostly because its prerelease and not optimised, but also because alot of the debug code is running, which has lots of extra error checking and logging and slows systems to a crawl. At release, debugging at this level is turned off. Things like the Aero theme can be turned off, but if you have a powerful graphics card, then using Aero may make things quicker as its relying on 3d hardware to draw the interface instead of the current slower (generally) GDI implementation. The other point is that a new OS will always be more of a resource hog than an older OS, simply because more resources are available and usable. I wouldn't want to run XP on a p3 1ghz with 256 ram, but that was a high end config when XP was released, and comparable to a dual core CPU with 2gb of RAM now in relative terms.

Ive just installed the latest beta of Vista on a Dell Optiplex GX520 and its running a dream a lot better than the last build

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

How'd you reckon it would run on a 3500+ AMD 64 Athlon, 7900GS graphics, and 1.5GB of DDR RAM?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,278 ✭✭✭peterk19

Probably pretty good my GX520 is only a Pentium D820 with a gig of ram and intel extreme graphics card its only a matter of finding the drivers and xp drivers seem to work ok for the few that i needed

Dreadin it actually. 2 many changes 2 quickly. Prob gonna wait on xp till all the teething problems sorted out.

Heh, one of the reasons behind Dx9's slowness is that it has alot of legacy code in it, by dropping it, DX10 should run alot faster, and enable alot more to happen in game at the same time. For the game developers, dx10 can't come quick enough.

    Windows Vista Ultimate
The best operating system ever offered for a personal PC
    ROFL

What a crock, they don't mention anything about games until you get to the 'Ultimate' edition. They can go **** themselves if they think I'm paying for that, I don't even think I'll bother robbing it of the internet.

When Vista comes out I'm actually downgrading to win2k... then later, unless my demands are met, win98.

In light of this starkly powerful protest, i have no doubt that microsoft will collapse under the immense emotional pressure caused by your actions and start handing out free copies of Vista Ultimate edition, and release all the source code from all their programs :D

    Will win98 ever become abandonware?

    Not in the near future.

3.x hasnt become abandonware yet, so it could be a while. On the other hand mac OS 7 is freeware :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,664 ✭✭✭rogue-entity

Abandonware is not freeware, its just that the software is not sold or supported by the author. Technically Win 1.0 - WinMe (and WinNT 3.5-NT 4.0) is abandonware. You cannot buy it anymore, and its not supported by Microsoft so using it, while illegal, is unlikly to bring down the rath of MS on you. There is nothing to stop MS releasing this unsupported software as freeware, for say, non-commercial use. They have not done so yet though.

Hopefully cedega will get a lot better and you can use a much better OS that is free for gaming.
