Bought a Maxtor 300GB 7200 rpm external hard last week via the internetand all was going great until TODAY!!!

The hard disk is now not recognised by the computer and is bleeping when powered on / connected via USB port, i vaguely know that this bleeping noise deems a fault, however how, why and what do i do??

The bleeping noise seems to be 3 long combined beeping noises if that is any help

I intend to send it back for a replacement however any reasons for this occurance and prevention / protection advisable for the furure??? regards wooly

Yes, i have tried using the hard disk in both my laptop and personal computer in all usb ports but the noise occurs once the power is switched on to the unit.......

Might not be it but before you send it back and if you already haven't done so (you probably are doing it correctly) Plug in the power to the external hard drive in the socket first, then the USB cable. I have people doing this the other way around and complaining to me that its not working. :)
