How to Organise a Poker Classic

    Hi,

I have suggested to the club of which I am a member, that we should have a poker classic as a fundraiser as I believe it could earn a few quid. However, it has now been left to me to actually organise the aforementioned poker classic. I used to play poker when I was about 12, but unfortunately I don't remember an awful lot from that period of my life, so don't really have a clue what's involved. I've found this site pretty useful as a resource for how to play the game (it will be purely for fun, no seriousness about it), but I suppose what I need is a checklist as to what I need to actually organise the night. I'm going to have to organise a venue, that's not a problem. I expect that we should have approx 100 people in attendance. What do I need in terms of chips? The idea of this is to be a fundraiser, not to break the bank, so cheap ass is the way that I'm hoping to go. How many packs of cards? How many people to a table - will each table require a dealer or is it ok if the players deal amongst themselves? How does it work regarding prizes etc. if we're to turn a profit - is it usually sponsored prizes and then the money at the door is profit and overheads?
Apologies for the questions, I'm sure I'm going to have many more in the future until I get this behind me!

    Thanks for any help.

good luck with this, theres a few people here who organise poker events for a living so they should be able give you a lot of advice i.e chip size, how many cards, buyin, level structure etc

i heard you can pick up big poker cases in dunnes for a very good price(chips)

I'm leaning towards Texas Hold'em as it seems to be the most popular, and I believe that it's so straightforward that even I could play it.

A moment to learn, a lifetime to master as they say.

Hold'em is probably your best bet for a few reasons.

    1. More players per table than draw (without reusing cards anyhow).
    2. Younger people would probably not play draw (I know I wouldn't).
    3. Easy to learn as you say.

Look in the tournament sub-forum for some specific advice on tournament setup, there have been threads like this in the past with advice and so forth, and even offers of services from boards members.

    Good luck.

I asked this exact same question a month ago and got a PM from Pokerevents, who supplied a TD (Stephen, who was absolutely brilliant), chips, dealt with all the money, sorted any disputes, and made sure that the tournament was a great success. And they did all that free of charge
Couldnt give them enough credit.and your right it was a great way to earn a few bob for the club.
So my advice is to try and get them involved, all they want is a bit of publicity ,and with 100 people you can easily provide that (we only had 30)
    Best of luck with it
if you need any more help give me a shout

Hey bud we have two clubs and a poker tour and if u need advice give me a bell 087-2828744 Neill dont know what kinda scale u want but i can organise another fella i know to run it for u but he will charge even on a fundraiser...

At least u will have satisfaction it will be run right as we have passed on a good few events as in pubs and fundraisers as it would not be cost effective for u to get us as with dealers tranport costs it mite not be worth your while ...

But if u only need a tournie director to organise and chips it wont be that bad at all....

    Sure if u need advice
