To all you people who use lol as an indicator that you are laughing out loud. Do you actually laugh out loud when you type that? I can understand it, maybe if someone made a joke about a serious topic and wanted everyone to know it was a joke.. so it's forgiveable in this instance.

But those of you that type it in everytime you are slightly amused... well I personally find that really irritating. A typical example:

John: Pissed last night, fell asleep on the armchair when I got home
Jim: lol! you drunken mess lol! rofl!

Hardly jim, I bet you didn't even smile.

"lol" for me is just a response to something mildly funny, or amusing. i don't actually laugh, maybe a small snicker... "lmao" for me, is when i'm actually laughing...

people who say "roffle" in real life really piss me off.

    Indeed.

I usually say it if I'm acknowledging that something was a joke, or if I think that something is genuinely funny.

My ex used to give me stick about laughing when someone made a joke or a wise-crack, and she knew I didn't think it was terribly funny, but I'd laugh anyway.

    But like, the alternative is...

Mate: "...and I fell asleep in the back garden!!! Can you believe that sh*t man?!?!?"
    Me: "Yes."

Jayzis, chillax the cax, it doesn't have to be comic gold to earn a bit of a snigger...!!!

I've always considered it to be a great talent (amongst those who do so) to be able to type rofl while actually rolling on the floor laughing.

I have a hard enough time typing properly while seated.

    ;)

yeah if it earns a snigger.. then lolrofl your heart out but if it doesn't then why pretend. I'm confused.. but totally relaxed.

I hardly ever use *lol* it bugs me. If I think someone is funny I’ll type haha/hehe. Nothing is that funny that is going to make me laugh out loud. Oh actually I lie, the IvaSmallOne and bubbles post in Irc made me laugh out loud.

Another thing I dislike about *lol* is when someone thinks they are funny and put *lol* at the end of their post, like they are stressing that what they have just said is really funny.

My Mum uses lol in her text messages to me. She texts with things like:

"Hey, how are you Gordon? lol"
    "We're off on holiday, lol"
"Dad's not feeling very well, he's got a bad virus. lol"

I asked her what was so funny, why was she typing lol all the time. It turns out she uses lol as "lots of love".

I know a guy who says 'Grrrrrr' in real life, just as if he typed it. Doesn't get agressive or anything, just says 'Grrrrr'. Weird.

    Haha, I'm liking that.
I would have thought my mother was taking the piss, because I use the internet - if I saw that, but she would never have heard lol, I wonder has she experienced it.

Now OP, for you there is the new acronym, tol. Thinking of laughing. You don't lol but it is on your mind. Tol!

i work tech support for a international company. we get calls from ireland, uk, mainland europe, US, asia, india, everywhere.

if they make a joke or sumtin, i might* say to them "haha rofflecopter lolz" and sometimes they might* reply wit a "lmfao".

*by "might" i mean "not a ****in chance in hell would i ever say sumtin like that in real life, and neither would a user anywhere in the world, but i just thought i'd make a post coz im bored in work"

I rarely use it, i usually say "hahaha" instead.

I never liked the rofl lmao etc acronyms.

I prefer using an emoticon for laughing.

I don't like using ''lol'' on forums but I use it excessively when chatting on messenger.

Lol - An acknowledgement of what the person has said and/ or I'm smiling.
    LOL - I'm laughing.

Not really - "grrr" isn't an abbrevation, it's an "Onomatopoeia".
I've always considered it to be a great talent (amongst those who do so) to be able to type rofl while actually rolling on the floor laughing.

I don't know, what about those people whose buttocks have fallen off from laughing, or who have even soiled themselves from laughing?

Tends to be the same with me.
I completely overuse it, one of my mates has actually called me LOL for a number of years now. Lol :D

I don't know what it is, but something about the term "lol" immediately makes me think the user of it is an idiot.

i like to say "LOL" in a monotone voice while keeping a completely straight face. actually laughing uses up too much energy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,046 ✭✭✭Dustaz

weh. The only thing that annoys me about 'lol' is, as has been said, people who use it in their own sentances rather than a reply

    lol i wuz in de shop n i tikled ur bum LOL! <EMOTICON> <EMOTICON> <CUTE LAUGHY EMOTICON>.

    Like thats pretty fucking annoying.

None of these things are as annoying as the irish online communitys continued use of 'tbh'.

Remember kids, nothing says "i have nothing important to say whatsoever but like embelishing my repsonses" like tbh.

This is a bordom relief site, i dont wish to write essays so to cut things down i would use "lol" to depict that the sentence was said in jest or to add emotion quickly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

    The only reason I'd use it on boards is because there's no decent smiley substitute;

    Cheesy ass grin :D
    Or
    sh*t eating smile :)

Those two just don't say "laughing at something funny" to me.
If I use lmao or rofl, I actually did utter an audible laugh at whatever had just been posted...it's not that rare an event.

But we definitely need a smiley depicting it (although that probably involves the use of an animated smiley which for some unbeknowst reason is a big no-no for the boards management).

Pacman smiley came close...but then they went and binned it. Shame.

When i seen boards today with all the styles gone, i went lol.
But then after a while it gave me a ****ing headache. Grrrr

I cannot say I would trust anyone who types "lol" and means it to find their bottom with a selection of maps, scientific equipment, and a second try.

I type exactly how many "Ha's" i say in real life... im very dilligent in that regard. In fact whenever i see a "lol" i imagine my mental representation of that person laughing at the funny object/article*

*this is all lies, no-one lol's
