Little white box interferring with Sky?

    hi all,

OK, this is going to sound odd. My father-in-law had Sky installed in January, and had no problems for 4 months. Then he started getting picture breakup that appeared to get worse and worse.

Sky came out multiple times, replacing the digibox first, and eventually the entire dish and cable. At that time the problem appeared to go away, but has now returned.

The Sky guys are suspicious about a white box installed on a thin pole (like an ariel) about 3 doors down from my FIL, which was installed about the time the trouble started. It's pointed in the general direction of the dish. I don't know what it is, but I've seen a few others around. I think it might be some kind of wireless broadband? It's about 20cm square.

Anyone ever hear anything like this before? I could understand some kind of interference maybe, but I cannot see how the problem would appear to clear up and then get worse. It's hard to imagine the interference damaging anything in the dish/LNB? Maybe it's all a red herring, but apparently the Sky guys are getting pretty annoyed, and my FIL is thinking of returning to Chorus.

    Ix.

It would normally need to be closer to interfere. And pointing at dish would likely focus any signal away from the LNB. Pointing at LNB can be a different story.

There are a lot of different systems.

Is it all channels or just a few?

A mobile phone system or cordless phone or 1.4Ghz security system can cause interference by pickup on the cable (not the dish, wrong frequency).

It's all a little unclear what the pattern is.

Some channels may be worse. As regards the box, maybe its closer than I thought at 1.5 semidetached house lengths.

As regards the direction, the box of course is a box, but the flat side is facing the dish and LNB.

If I find out anything more I'll post back. I was hoping others would have come across this. Of course as I said the white box might not be the problem. Maybe it's something else interferring.

    Ix.
