Widescreen Lcd 4 Gaming.... Opinions

    That's not a widescreen monitor.

I've been considering the 215TW (details here) since it has VGA, DVI, composite, s-video, and component inputs, since I want to use it with my two PCs, my XBox, and my XBox 360 :) Komplett have it for €599 at the moment.

If you don't want the extra inputs, then the 205BW might be better - it only has VGA and DVI.

There's a 20" NEC widescreen monitor that has got good reviews also, though it has a glossy screen which puts some people off. Also Dell's 2007FPW seems good.

Note that I have no personal experience with any of these monitors, I'm just going by what I've found on the Internet :) Check out AVSForums for lots of educated discussion on these matters.

    Ciarán.

Man that samsung monitor is sweeeeettt! Although I could never justify spending €600 on just a monitor. Although the Dell 2007FPW is sweet too, and its down to €480 at the moment.

I have the NEC 20" wide screen (glossy) and it does kick ass for gaming in terms of response time, contrast & colours but glossy is not for everyone.

No ghosting at all in any games, tearing with v-sync disabled is something you can never eliminate but it is barely noticeable compared to some other displays. Great expansion mode which fills the screen when using lower resolutions, this was one of my major worries as I hate black bars at the side and the NEC system works really well filling the screen with the image.

Annoyingly it has no adjustable stand which is a bit crap considering its hefty price €600.

    Gaming:
Wide screen support isn't there in every game especially older ones but it is getting better however you still get the occasional new title that does not have wide screen support.

If you want to game at the max resolution be sure you have the hardware powerful enough to run games at the native resolution of the display.

Check out these sites as well with guides on how to hack some games into supporting wide screen resolutions

BTW this Viewsonic is often considered the NEC's closest competitor but minus the glossy screen it has gotten very favourable reviews around the net.

I've got that monitor. Its €375 on Komplett btw

Its great for games with the 6ms responce time. In Windows its good enough, but the viewing angle isn't the best.

Dell only got 16ms response time like 17" i got now. Notice a lot of tearing with it in some games.
Nec is what i'm lookin for but it stretches my budget a bit at mo. Is the Nec really worth the extra quids over the Viewsonic or Samsung. Might wait few mths n get Nec if mate will hold on to buy this 17".

The NEC is great but not for everyone's taste in case you have not used a glossy display before I have and they dont bother me but I know some people who find their reflective nature drives them nuts.

If you haven't used such a display before I would recommend taking a look at a one before parting with your cash, a lot of laptops have glossy screens these days which is a good place to spot one.

Like I said you will never totally avoid tearing with v-sync disabled but if you do want to minimize it then go with the NEC or Viewsonic displays, read more here.

What do you mean by tearing? I'm using a Dell laptop at the moment, the screen couldn't be less than 16ms response time, and I haven't noticed any problems while playing CSS or anything, but I suppose I don't know what to look for.

I'm buying one myself, and am torn between this Samsung and this BenQ. Both have good reps on a popular widescreen gaming forum.
