See my DVD thread for more info, windows is picking up the devices correctly in the balloon pop-up thing but when it comes to installing the device it cant find the driver.
Can't even pick up a keyboard.

Im running Xp pro service pack 2 on a Latitude D610.

Go into device manager (Start->settings->control panel->System->hardware).

USB controllers are at the bottom of the list. Remove them all, then restart PC. See if that helps.

try removing all usb controllers from device manage and reboot

edit... sorry what he said ^^^^^^^

Ok, doing so now. Won't allow me to remove the Enhanced Host Controller though.

Had the same problem last night with a video camera!! The driver installed but didn't find the hardware!!
When in to the (Start->settings->control panel->System->hardware) and say a yellow icon bedie the camera!! It didn't install right because it was not a microsoft signed driver!! If you see the yellow warning right click the device and search for the drive and the warning will come up asking if you want to continue!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

leave that one and just reboot see what happens

What message comes up? Disconnect any usb devices attached and try again.

If it still won't removed, restart in safe mode and try to remove them all then. Then restart into normal mode. Should reinstall them all.

    Ok, its kinda worse now.

It can't find drivers for the controllers I removed, they're all under other devices now.

The error for the controller I couldn't remove said it was necessary for boot up.

Something not right there.... Windows should have drivers for those by default, they're generic so to speak.

have u your windows install cd they should be on that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭TomCo

Is it possible that driver files have been removed to stop employees installing devices?

Or that the guy who had this before me was a complete noob and went about deleting crap to free up space?

If I go asking for windows cd's and such in work Ill probably be waiting months.
I flagged network shares for deletion in June and I can still access them.

ok wasn't aware it was a work pc

if u can remove devices i would assume u can reinstall them tbh

maybe try the dell support in their site

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭TomCo

We all know what dell support is like, it its not in "Help and Support" you're fcuked, and this is really a windows issue.

Nah, I'd prefer to handle this myself there's not problem messing around with the laptop.

Where exactly does windows store its device drivers is it in system32/drivers or windows/drivers. The former is 25.9mb and the latter is empty.

    system32.

I assume, that you have SP2 installed?

Because if you don't there's your problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

OP stated in first post he's running XP SP2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭TomCo

    Yes, check my opening post.

Even if Service Pack 2 wasn't installed it should easily be able to pick up a usb keyboard.

try reinstalling a driver of ne of the prolematics and see does it give u a file name when u click 'browse'

if it does u can search for that file

Ok, theres not mention of any specific file anywhere.

When I go to "I will choose the driver to install" the categories are listed but there are no drivers for any device in any category.

Try installing the Intel chipset drivers I have observed these before switching on/off USB devices after installing (no idea as to why) so they must be doing something to the USB controllers, it's a long shot but worth a try at least.

Also it wouldn't be to do with something like a security policy on this laptop is set to not allow the installation of drivers via the Group Policy Editor ? (even if you are admin)

Edit: TomCo here a direct download link to the Intel chipset drivers that should hopefully bypass the websense.

You know, I actually read the post before making my own. Funny how I missed that yet somehow not suprising.

    In that case BLING BLING!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭TomCo

Sorry I couldn't download anything on that page, probably due to websense.

Ok, I was just given another laptop unfortunatly its an older model and doesnt have USB 2.0 so its useless.

It is working otherwise though, and actually picks up the DVD drive I originally wanted to use, can I copy the drivers across from one machine to the other? They have the same install as there's one image they use on all the pc's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

if its the same image it should work and maybe u just may need 1 or 2 more drivers or maybe sp2 which u can just download hopefully

why don't u try copy the driver files to a cd and put them on the old laptop (the 610)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭TomCo

Both laptops have been sent off for recloning at a cost of €500 (!?) unfortunately, I would have prefered to fix it myself really but thus is corporate bureaucracy.

I asked for a windows cd and was told that I would have to contact the IT center for one, and to except to be blocked at every turn. Seems they don't want people fixing their own Pc's.

Start / Run - %SYSTEMROOT% and Enter. It should open up at C:\Windows (Presuming nothing was changed during the OS install). Just something quick to make sure the basic path is correct.
Next up check the contents of C:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386, there should be Driver.cab and SP2.cab .
Open System Properties / Advanced / Environment variables and make sure the Path at least has the following:
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;, if not add them to it.

As per my post above the laptops were taken away yesterday by a German chap and delivered to my desk this morning, they just did a reclone.

I was having a chat with the boss there and he told me the guy who had this machine before me was trying to circumvent his limited access so he could install programs.

Any idea how he managed to **** up the machine doing this?

Could he have changed those classpaths/environment variables with his limited access?

Prob didn't have a notion of what he was doing and just fucked the whole thing up. All sorted now?

And no way it costs 500e to reclone. Someone pulled that figure out of their arse.

I know thats not what it costs, but thats what they charge.
I could do the bloody thing myself.

Just got my admin access back so I'm checking now.
