I have found a couple of options so far both 1 way and return. These are all departing November 2nd also.

    Melbourne Return
    1098 via Hong Kong

    Melbourne 1 way
    785 via Kuala Lumpur

    Sydney Return
    1068 via Seoul

    Sydney 1 way
    715 via Bahrain and Singapore

Reckon these are good prices for that time of year or do people think I could get them a bit cheaper shopping around some more. Also, are you better getting travel insurance seperate from the flights or would it work out cheaper buying them with the same crowd.

Seems like some reasonable fares - assuming they are €. I imagine you're going via London - if so, and if the via Kuala Lumpur fare is with Malaysian, then that might be a reasonable choice.

As for Travel Insurance..the simple answer is "it depends". Shop around, compare the policies. The cheapest doesn't nessecarily mean the best.

Check out Trailfinders.ie for the flights,I was looking at going next year and they had the cheapest flights. Also check out Ace insurance-they had the cheapest annual holiday insurance (worldwide).:)

The flight is actually with Air China, but there is an option to go with malaysia airlines for just about the same price ( 5 quid more i think ), are they much better? And yes it is via london.

I've already travelled around SE Asia, well excpept malaysia but I was told I wasn't missing too much. I've been Thailand twice and also Cambodia and Vietnam.

The Sydney return flight is what i'm edging towards at the minute, I wouldn't mind stopping off in Seoul for a couple of weeks. Has anyone been there before? Whats it like, is it expensive etc?

I would also like the option of the return flight even though I'm going for atleast a year and probably won't use it, but just in case i have to get home for anything unforseen you know. I reckon it could be worth having the return for that rather than trying to get another 1 way home at short notice if i had to.

    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks.

I flew with Air China before from Amsterdam to Bangkok and I swore Id never fly with them again. The seats have no room, which is pretty serious for a long haul flight (believe me!). Ryanair nearly has more room tbh.
The food we were given was terrible, I know in flight meals are rarely gourmet food, but this was just shocking.
When we were booking our flight, Air China were the cheapest by about €100. If I am flying long haul again and am offered Air China I will gladly pay any amount to avoid them.

to sum up, Air China => Avoid like the plague!

I ended up going one cheaper, decided on the one way in the end because I reckon I wont be coming back the same way all things going well. Hopefully I'll go through S America. Got a flight one way with Gulf Air for E 646 inc all taxes etc. Although it is via London,Bahrain and then Singapore. Didn't realise it was thorugh Singapore until after it was booked, the initial description was a bit vague. What are Gulf air like?

Gulf air are grand. Good price too.

An aside, do aussie immigration have problems with one way tickets?

I think there used to be a bit of an issue with the one way tickets, but from what I've heard recently you're grand as long as you show you've enough money in your bank account to pay for a ticket outta there. I know a few people who went over recently and certainly atleast some of them had one way tickets and none of them reported any trouble.

Someone please correct me if i'm wrong though, has anyone else heard what the policy is recently?

Also, does anyone know exactly whether insurance companies (i know obviously it would varry from policy to policy) cover you for a ticket home if family members become ill, deaths etc? Would it only be immediate family if so, or does anyone know of one that would extend to grandparents, aunts, uncles..?

Ah, I should probably start another thread for that question. Don't want to drag this off topic on people.

I'd much prefer a trip with Malaysian than Air China any day

I recently got a return from Heathrow to Sydney with 90 mins on the ground in Hong Kong for about €900 departing late august, returning early october if thats useful for comparison.

    You're right.
There's no issue with one-way tickets anymore. I flew in on one in March. It has changed because it's now possible to extend the working holiday visa for another year.

They are supposed to check if you have sufficient funds ($5000) but they didn't in my case (or anyone else I know to be honest).

OP, those prices seems pretty standard. My one-way cost 700ish with Singapore Air. Good airline although my bags did end up in Hong Kong for a couple of days!!

Are these prices plus taxes?? Tax on these fares can range from EUR170.00 - EUR350.00 so beware of all charges before you decide to book....Also flights are becoming more and more heavily booked every day so book a.s.a.p...they all seem like pretty good fares to be honest!!! ;)
