Baggage Not loaded onto plane

    A little help please

Arrived back from Sicily last night, flew with Dubrovnik Airlines (charter flight) they are basic enough a bit like ryanair, but they got us there and back. Booked the holiday through Crystal Holidays

Last night we left Catania in Sicily at 10 and the turn around time seemed very quick- one or two people on the plane mentioned that they noticed the baggage was still on the tarmac as we were reversing to head for the runway. But the cabin staff/pilot said nothing so we presumed these people were mistaken.

Landed at Dublin at 1230 and as soon as everyone had cleared the airplane and was in the baggage hall there was an announcement that not a single piece of luggage had been loaded onto the plane due to weight restrictions(BS?).

Went to Servisair desk, they were very polite and helpful, and gave my details and got a reference number. I was told to ring today which I did and was told baggage was still in Sicily and will not move before tomorrow and may be as late as Sunday. The problem is that there are no midweek flights from Sicily to Dublin.

Now my problem is what do I do until, worst case scenario, if I dont get my bags until next week.

    1. I have no toiletries
    2. I have no shoes ( only a pair of flip flops)
    3. I have a hotel and tickets for the Galway races for Thurs and Friday) but no clothes and I mean no clothes.
4., My wife has a job interview this week and has no shoes/make-up/Hair stuff.

I am not looking to make a few euros out of this but we have to go out and buy a couple of hundred euros worth of stuff, that we already have sitting in a bag in Sicily. Travel insurance will only cover €120 for baggage delay

Where do I stand - any help is greatly appreciated

If you have travel insurance you should be able to buy what you need and claim it back, keep the receipts.

Where did you book this from? If it was a travel agent I would say to contact them about it.

Checked that but it only covers myself and the wife for €120 in total which will not cover everything we need

Booked through Crystal Holidays and will get onto them tomorrow

You're going to have to buy new stuff, which at some time down the track you were going to have to do anyway, but you're going to have to do it now. That or you borrow off people.. And next time get better travel insurance.

I have looked at a number of travel insurance policies and 120 seems to be the norm paid out for baggage delays.

Daiixi, Thanks for the advice and help and I will indeed ensure I have better insurance in the future. And also now I realise that I would have had to buy these things at some time in the future anyway. Thats my problem solved in one post so I guess its off to the shops for me to splash out a few huindred euros on stuff that I cant afford and dont want to buy.

If anyone has expierienced this in the past or has any examples or can quote any regulations in this area it would be greatly apprciated

If I was due to interview someone and the called me in advance and explained that this had happened. I would be quite happy for them to come to the interview a bit scruffy.

The tour operator and ground handling company in Sicily are responsible for getting the bags back to you as soon as possible. Just because there is no direct flight from Sicily to Dublin does not mean they have to wait. They can route them via any necessary points to get the bags to you. Of course that would cost them money. What happens if they wait until the next direct flight and the flight has a full load? Will they just wait another week?

I had a bag loaded onto a Shannon - New York flight instead of a Shannon - Manchester flight a few years ago. Unfortunately I was going on to South Africa and got the bag 3 days late but it had been routed back from New York - Amsterdam - Joburg - Capetown. If they wanted they could send your bags back via other points or even cargo.

As for claims, you are also entitled to claim from the airline responsible if your insurance has insufficient cover. As this was a charter you should contact the tour operator for more details on this.

If you have arrived "back" then surely you are from here and you should have all this kit at home ?

Im sure €120 would get you enough to get you by in Pennys???? Lost baggage is a fact of travel , its annoying but its life. How ever Servis Air should be pulling out all the stops to get your bags back to Dublin ASAP!!! They are also required to courier them to your home , you dont have to go to the Airport to get them.
