    First post in this forum!!!!

I've been thinking of trying out some form of martial arts for a few reasons; fitness, something new to try and self defence.

From what I can see there is alot of different forms, can anyone recommend what I should try?

I had been thinking of Ju Jitsu, as it covers from what I can see it covers what I was looking for, I'm looking for something more than jsut kicking the $h!£ out of someone.
If it helps I'm 5'6", 9 1/2 stones, light build but fit, thats why I was looking for an art that doesn't require a lot of strenght.

Also If anyone know of any clubs in the city centre where it would also be a great help.

Mixed Martial Arts. It covers and caters for all you need to realistically defend yourself as much as one man can do on a practical level. It will keep you in shape, and the various ranges of MMA rely much more on technique than brute strength.. Strength conditioning could come at a later date. Think of it as a few martial arts rolled into one, to make you the supreme king overlord.

    Hey,
Jiu Jitsu Aikido and Judo have the approach you're looking for. Jiu Jitsu, in my experience seems to have a whole variety of systems within that title, so I couldn't comment on what you'll find if you go to a club. Aikido is not something I'd recommend as a fighting type art, though it seems to be interesting to some people as a traditional art. Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu would be the ones I'd pick for fitness and applicable skills.

Plenty of those around, BJJ in Rathcoole (www.sbgireland.com)I run a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training group in Glasnevin (www.ko-martialarts.com) which you'd be welcome down to. There's BJJ and Judo in Donaghmede (www.sbgnorthside.com), there's Judo damn near everywhere. I'm not too sure about the city centre though.

    Hi Gillo
If you're interested there is a Indonesian Silat Club in Sheldon Park Leisure Club - Walkinstown, right beside the Kylemore Luas Stop, Thursday 8pm. There is also a new Class opening in Club Vitae in city centre in September on Saturday morning. If you want more details this is our website www.silateurope.com or you can PM

If you are light, fast, and flexible (or could be), taekwondo may be of interest to you? But it's good to shop around and find your match, especially with all the diverse and useful recommendations on the MA forum in response to your questions.

    Hello Gillo,

Being small is not a problem in martial arts after all look at John Kavanagh -sure he's only light ;) and he proves you don't have to be BIG to be deadly [just kidding JK]

I recommend SBG Ireland, [ or any of their affiliate clubs] though based in Rathcoole, it offers Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, mma, judo and muay thai under the excellent tutelage of paddy clint.

All your martial arts needs under one roof really but like you were advised in a previous post shop around and hopefully you'll find what you are looking for soon.

    Good hunting

brazilian jiu jitsu is very much ground based grappling.

Traditional [japanese] offers stand up, some grappling, weapons etc.
There are different types of traditional ju jitsu and each club will resemble the chief coaches preference.

check out youtube.com.....you can find a view of pretty much any martial art....you can even download an entire gracie jiu jitsu instructional dvd....the gracie family are the founders of brazilian jiu jitsu, just so you know ;)

Yeah, theres some crazy stuff on youtube.

To be honest I'd be more interested in the standing up than, grappleing on the floor. Idid however come across page, which has good explanitions on various disciplines, it made interesting reading.

Edit; no idea why but I wrote crap instead of crazy

Try find a more traditional based JJ then or even HapKiDo which is Korean JJ really!!

Some schools of JJ can be either way too trad or ultra modern!!

As mentioned, go have a google and just go along and have peek!!

Let us know how you get on!!

    I love stand up too.

Started off with karate then tae kwon do then some kung fu tiny bit of boxing
and I WASN'T really interested in grappling until I was taken to the ground and didn't have a clue what to do except scramble or take a few slaps.

I think everyone such find the martial art they like and do it but I do recommend that every should at least give grappling a go.

It's great when you lose any fear/hesitation of going to the ground.

Anyway best of luck with your search.

As for youtube.com you're right lots of crap but some great bas rutten stuff!!!

Tell us where you live and we'll tell you what clubs are local. IT's often best to visit a few differnt clubs to see what's on offer, what the people are like and see what fits best what you want to do.

Thanks for the advice, I've never seen such a helpful forum.

Mola.mola; I live in Skerries, but to be honest am in town most of teh time with work, so city centre is ideal, I've heard of a club that meets somewhere in East wall so I think I'll give them a try.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

Skerries eh? You are right next to one or two of the best Judo clubs in Ireland I believe. There's one in Lusk and one in Portmarnock. Swords is fairly rich with MA clubs too. Aikido, BJJ, TKD, Boxing.

Kev from me class i presume. Hi btw buddy
Yeah judo would be fun i think. Is it practical in a street fight sense? Il try anything once :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 314 ✭✭Mola.mola

kinda. it's a bit weird. i'll have a word with u soon and i'll explain my view on this to you in person.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,183 ✭✭✭✭Will

I know it involves alot of throws and ground movement. Also that when grabbing someone in a street fight lets say youl most likely just rip clothes...thats if you even get close enough.
You better hurry though, leaving on the 23rd :)
