Lads, I'm new to this biking scene and recently had my first ever spin on a moped last week having never really driven anything with two wheels and an engine and I had so much crack that I'm gonna get myself one for tearing around on. My only problem is that I know feck all about them.

A friend of mine has one he's selling a little peugeot 50cc but as he never drove it himself he cant offer me any advice. It must be said that I am 25 years of age and not the usual 16 year old rider.

Where and roughly how much shoul I be prepared to pay for insurance on said moped?

    What goes wrong with them?

What licence do I need to drive one? I have a full car licence for the last few years will this cover me?

Suggestions on protective gear for driving one?

Also what would be the next step to take engine size wise on these things? I'm a fairly big bloke (about 18stone)

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated as I just wanna get out there and have some fun while the weather is still good.

Your full B will cover you on one of these but that size of engine would really suck 'performance' wise for a guy your size / weight.

Insurance is only with Axa through AON for machines of this nature but I'm open to correction on this, used to be that Carole Nash would only insure bikes over 250cc and riders over 25.

Yeah your car licence will cover you up to 50cc. I sold a yamaha majesty 125 a few months ago - very very nippy and great fun in the summer months!! You can get up to 60 mph out them without stressing it too much. Started with a ovetto 50cc - the slowest bike in the world. Don't bother with 50cc.. and hopped up to a majesty.. I used it about 6-8 times!!

I Had the car also so i was a little lazy but the big plan was to beat the traffic.. they certainly do that! I'd advise you to get the provisional bike licence.. simple theory test and you'll be good for anything up to 125cc. Think it'll cost 45 for the test and about 20 quid for the licence. 50 quid yearly tax or there abouts. And i paid 650 a year for insurance on a provisional at 28 years of age. The bike cost me 1300.

If you after bike gear i still have brand new jacket & trouser. There xxl and as i said i only used them 6-8 times max. If you interested let me know and i give an email address.

Moped (M) licence that comes with a full car licence will only cover you on a 50cc bike with the restrictors still in place - i.e keeping you below 45kph. otherwise you need to get a provisonal A1.
