I'm gonna be starting Multimedia in Dcu this coming semester and just want to know what its like from anyone who is doing the course or has done it. This will be my third year in Dcu so I'm not asking about life at DCU.. just the course?

Is it strongly based on the use of computers?

Is there a good web design element to the course?

Will I need to buy a laptop or other stuff?

How is the continuous assesment worked?

Is it enjoyable in your opinion?

    Thanks!

Ok, I did the degree in DCU, so I'll do my best to answer your questions. Of course from this September it has become a much different course, changing from 4 years to 3 years, and from having a quick look at the new prospectus, some modules have been removed/changed/amalgamated.

Yes. Obviously Multimedia involves the amalgamation of various media elements, sound, video and other interactive media. All of these are created on computer using various programs. Further to this a lot of your research will take place on the web. Basically, apart from design sketches most of your work will be based on computers.

Not a whole lot, based on what I'm seeing on the new prospectus. The emphasis is on interactive multimedia as opposed to authoring for the web. There are a few modules, but it wouldnt comprise a lot of the course. Having said that, for certain 'authoring' modules, you may be given the option of creating a website or cd/dvd-rom. I always preferred the CD/DVD option, but that's just personal preference.

I didnt buy a laptop until 4th year. It was well worth it, given the pressure on computers in the college, and the flexibility it gave me for final year project work. I bought a 40GB Hard drive in 2nd year, and it was an excellent buy. I just got a small 2.5" one (laptop HD), with an external case. Was handy for keepin all project stuff, and was small enough to carry around, rather than carrying the larger external drives.

I'm not sure I know how to answer this. Maybe be more specific?

Yes I had an excellent four years. Aside from having the best times with friends, and enjoying the overall life that you have at college, I was doing a course that allowed me to create short films, radio pieces, 3D designs interactive CDs and DVDs and much more. Again, it's all a matter of personal preference.

The loss of INTRA is a big loss in my opinion. My placement was a very worthwhile experience.

Thanks for all the info 6ix...very helpful.

In relation to the continuous assessment, is it based on projects mostly or presentations or monitored classes?

Also what is the weekly timetable like? ie how many hours should i expect to spend in lectures?

Mostly on Projects, some presentations (particularly in theory based subjects). Generally though, you'll have a module in Flash, for example, and you'll have two projects to complete throughout the semester, which will take a fair bit of time, particularly the second one.

Lecture time is minimal 12-16 hours a week. However, once you start projects, you'll be spending a lot more time in college (or maybe on your laptop). Even if you have a laptop, you'll have to meet with your colleagues because there is a lot of groupwork.

A lot of other DCU students thought multimedia was easy/a joke because we had little/no exams. However, the other side of the coin was that they were free to enjoy €3 Tuesdays etc while we had sh1tty projects to hand in the followin day.

Having said that, if you're the lazy type, the course allows you to get by doin F-all if your groupmates put up with it. There are people like that in every year of the course, i normally grouped-up with mates, and we all did our share, so it was grand. You have a good laugh too so it pays off in that way, and you're not left tryin to do other people's work.

First year is easy anyway, damn all effort and you'll be fine.
