laptop suddenly turns off

Recently my laptop has taken to suddenly switching off unannounced, I'm wondering whether it might be overheating, or whether its a virus of some sort.

The reason I suspect a virus is that sometimes a message comes up saying "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close", although this could be hours before the actual shutdown

Has anyone experienced a similar problem- is it the result of some sort of virus (I'm generally very careful and havent had a major virus problem yet)? Or if it is an overheating problem (the base of the comp does get very hot now and again), what's the best way to stop it turning off?

    steve

We have a wonderful Laptop forum here.

The message you are getting could be anything, probably just a program crashing. Is there any particular program you are running when it crashes?

If its a heat problem, simply give the vents located around the side and back of the laptop a quick blast with some canned compressed air to blow out any dust bunnies that maybe hiding around the fans slowing them down.If its a windows related error, the ole AVG/AdAware/Spybot trio would be a good start to see if you have any crapola on the machine.Check the system with hijack this too to see if any nasties have set up residence!

download install spybot sd and adaaware program, run virus scan ,you have a virus or malware, spyware, or else the windows registry is maybe corrupted, you can do restore ,put in windows cdrom ,press r button.
