Silicon Image 3112 PCI SATA controller - how to boot off it?

    Hi,

I am unable to boot off any HD connected to a PCI S-ATA controller card I've recently purchased- thus I can't get past a certain stage in the windows xp installation process. I've read in several places that I should check out my mainboard BIOS for a special option to boot off add-in cards but there is non (mobo: Asus A7N8X deluxe). I have already flashed the mainboard and the S-ATA card to the latest bios. The HD I'm using is a brand new replacement drive from Maxtor (I ran WD diagnostics on it and there are no errors). I've also tried to boot off my old HD which has in existing XP installation- to no avail.

BTW the XP installation cd can be ruled out as the cause of the problem too because I've tried three different versions. I've also tried different versions of the SI 3112 driver.

I also doubt there is some hardware fault with the S-ATA drive because I have booted into windows off my mobo-integrated S-ATA chip before and I could copy stuff off HDs connected to the PCI card no problem.

Some speedy advice would be appreciated as I'm leaving the country on Monday and this is a friend's PC that needs to be fixed.

(I usually post on techseekers.net but that site seems to be perma-down?)

    Cheers in advance!

During the windows installation , when it says , " Press F6 to install third party raid or SCSI controllers , have you tried this option ? that is usually how this is done ?

The drivers for the PCI card will need to be on floppy and some time after you press F6 ( it does not pop up straight away ) you will be asked for the floppy and once XP reads the drivers off the floppy you should be good to go.

Yep, I've used the latest driver off the Silicon Image site every time I've attempted installation. It read the driver no problem and copied over all files correctly but as soon as you have to boot off the HD to continue installation the screen goes completely black and stays that way.

Try setting the first boot device to SCSI and see waht happens.

Well it could be something to do with Asus own bios, I once had a similar problem to yours but a bit different.

With an Asus nForce 4 board I plugged in a PCI 3112 card and the system would post but as soon as that was done it would go to a black screen, couldn't boot from any device.

Tried everything and could not get it to work with the Asus board, contacted Asus tech support who promptly ignored me. Luckily I managed to pawn the card off to someone else (where it worked fine) and ditched the Asus board.

Setting to SCSI sets it to boot an add-in card so there isn't a whole lot more you can do or at least I cant think of anything more other than try a PCI card with a different chip one that isn't Silicon Image based to avoid whatever this compatibility problem is with Asus boards.

Edit: Oh yeah on the off chance make sure if it is in the bios that Expansion BIOS INT 13 (or something like that) is set to enabled, conversely if it already is try turning it off and see what happens.

Edit-2: Downloaded the manual for the Asus A7N8X Deluxe & INT 13 doesn't seem present as a bios option so that kills that idea then.
