Picked up one of those iQon Qompanion 5011 laptops for €599 in tesco today and have a question for anyone that might know or also bought one. There is a slot beside the firewire connection and was wondering what this was. The thing is I am having trouble connecting to the net with the wireless setup and was wondering if the wireless card in this lappy is built in or does it go into that slot?. Becuase if its not built in I am missing one:eek:

    Thanks Cubix

    Have you asked Mr. Manual?

Any chance of a picture? If you have a wireless card, you should notice the icon on the system tray by the clock or check the Device Manager tab in Control Panel->System->Hardware. It could be a PCMCIA slot.

look up pcmia slot on google image search ,see does it look like your slot.winxp has built in wifi set up wizard.

My mother has the same laptop and I just sorted her wireless set up fairly easily there. It's built in.

Yeah tried Karoma,Everything else is listed except this slot go figure:rolleyes: . Havent got the camera at the moment Ruu and the PCMCIA slot is on the other side.Im thinking it might be a card read lads as its kind of the size of a fuji camera card and has a row of brass connectors.
Fade2black nice to know its built in, I am trying to connect to my linksys gateway (wag54g)Will try it again tomorrow

    Cheers

Is there an icon/image beside this mysterious hole?
    CF card reader possibly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

If its a card reader it'll probably have a number of slots for XD, SD, MMC (or perhaps just one of those) and like Karoma said it should have a little icon beside it for example the one below would be USB.

U get a little manual that lists all the parts with pretty little pictures

but iQon rarely install the Card reader drivers, so, they dont work

Thanks lads, managed to track down a pic on the cd manual, its a 4in1 card reader. I know these computers get a lot of negative press but for €300 for this spec you really could not go wrong. I not hoping to break any records with this lappy but for a it of lite work ie:net/storage/ word processing etc I reckon it should do the job. Now that I now what the slot is and the wireless card is internal, just have to figure out what I am doing wrong.

Can hookup and see all other pc's on my network when plug in via a network cable but does not want to know when I am trying wirelessly

download netstumbler ,click autoconfigure card in menu, are you seeing the card in control panel, hardware, device manager.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,161 ✭✭✭cubix

Will do gamer, yea everything is AoK in device manager. On the linksys gateway I have set it to mixed mode/channel 11/wireless ssid broadcast on/security mode disabled/wireless access set to All

Will stick up a couple of screen shots if I dont have any luck with netstumbeler. Is there anyway to check which one is not working (linksys/lappy) without another wireless device.

When I run netstumbler and it does it scan it says there is no "Aps active". The laptop and Linksys gateway are right beside each other,so even though the wireless lan light is on the linksys does this mean the wireless side of the linksys is buggered?

one step at a time, get wifi card switched on,do you see it small icon ,in system tray, lower right side near system clok, volume, icon, click on it, read wifi router transmitter manual, attach it to a pc,thru ethernet, usually, or usb ,then set up linksys to broadcast wifi,b,and g,2.4 ghz.read laptop manual, how do i switch on the card.when you have linksys router connected to pc,you can browse into it thru internet explorer,to setup up screen, you only need to do this once.if wifi card on, then in netstumbler, click, menu, Device, you,ll see your device listed, then click scan.cntrl,b is scancommand.i dont need theres anything wrong with linksys, it needs to be setup to broadcast wifi,b,or g, is it atrtached to a pc,or does it have the dsl/phone line going straight in to linksys.read liksys manual, you attach it to pc at least once to browse to setup, webpage, do search google ,setup linksys router model xxx ,what model,u have, wifi mode, i had to do this once to setup up bband on a nettopia router, thru usb cable from pc.i dont think you just turn on linksys and it setups up itself, leave all encrption off until you get card working picking up a signal.linksys, has to be setup ,thru a cable,to pc or laptop at least ONCE,password, etc.

I am nearly sure the wireless card is turned on becuae when you go into the properties of the wireless card and click configure it gives you the option to turn it on or off. And by the looks of it,card is on by default. Still getting nothing on netstumbler even though the intel wireless card for the laptop is selected. Going to go round to the mates as he is running a wireless setup too, will see if I can connect to his with my laptop and if so will try my linksys gateway around there. Will check back later and let you know how I got on

    Thanks

Despite everything appearing to be there (WLAN icon, card listed in devmgmt.msc,etc.), it won't work unless you press the silver button at the top near the power button with the wireless icon. Wait 2 mins. Search for available networks (If your router is broadcasting the SSID, otherwise-manually set it up,etc.) as normal.

does card show up in netstumbler,as a device, turn on card with switch on laptop, linksys may need to be setup in order to broadcast wifi signal, see do u recieve signal in
    your mates gaff.

Spot on Karoma thats all it was. Why did'nt you just say that in the first place
instead of saying "Did you read Mr Manual re: the wifi 'switch'". I had a look through the cd manual but could not see anything regarding the wifi switch, is it in there?

And make life easier for others? Bah!
I don't own one - so I can't say. The iqonsupport website is rubbish.

If anyone else finds them self with the same problem I was having as Karoma suggested make sure your wireless switch is "ON" and can be found at the top of the keyboard. Foto attached for other noobs (like me)

i know this has nothing to do with this tread but anywho i just got one of the 799 laptops, it says on the box "s-video tv out" i was under the impression that this meant it could be connected to the telly but i can't see any way to connect it to a tv, are they refering to the vga monitor output on the back or am i missing something. thanks in advance and sorry cubix

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,161 ✭✭✭cubix

On my one Dermot it has an s-video connection on the right hand side (as you look at it). So you will need to pick yourself up a s-video to scart lead. Check out the pic

go to peats,or good pc shop, ask for svideo to scart connector, or svideo to rca connector, depending on what connectors your pc has, the scart unit has,in,out switch, press in,scart unit 5euro approx, rca connectors, round yellow,is video, red green, sound, if scart is being used, you cud connect thru, vcr,scart,av1 or 2, press av on tv remote,av1 ,2,or 3, set pc resolution 800x600 or less , unless you have a hd hidef tv.look at www.svideo.com for info ,re; PC TO TV.

Have another look Dermot, but its the sort of connection you cant miss. Is there any flip down doors/catchs that it might be hidden behind?

Nope, it's not there! I have the 799 one also, and despite what it says on the box, there is no S Video output. Nor do I have the 4 in 1 card reader, though I don't care about that.

Wonder what iQons offical blurb will be, and if enough people ring up will they start dishing out cash back to stop the flood of returns.

Doubt it. Like most manufacturers, they have the usual "iQon reserve the right to change product specifications without prior notice" to cover themselves

I dont know byte, I am sure there is something in the sales of goods act that if it came in a box that has listed on it "s-video" it should have s-video.

It should be 'as described', but the issue is between the customer and shop.
