    Hi,

Im just wandering if anyone who has travelled to america recently needed to get their passport updated so to have the new Chip installed. My Passport was issued in 1998 and doesnt have this chip but is still valid for another few years. With security increased when flying to america Im wandering if I have to get a new passport with this chip. Ive rang the travel agent but they have not been helpfull. I appreciate any information you can give me.

    Thanks Alot

How do I know if I have a machine-readable passport?

Travelers should look at the bottom of their passport [the photo page] for two lines that are typeface lines, that have letters, numbers and hatch marks." The two lines at the bottom of a machine-readable passport, for example, would look like the following:

LINE 1: P COUNTRY LAST NAME << FIRST NAME < MIDDLE NAME <<<<<
LINE 2: PASSPORT NUMBER COUNTRY DOB<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I don't think they are manufacturing these new passports just yet.
The above is from the US Embassy website so if you have a machine readable passport you should be alright. You'll just have to get finger printed and photographed (like everyone else) if you are going directly to the US from Dublin.

Just back from the states and confirm the last posters post. Your card should be machine readable and you should be OK.
If going by aerlingus you will clear immigration in Dublin. :)

Is it only AerLingus that does the immigration in Dublin before you go?
I'm flying Continental for the first time this year and hope it would be the same...?

All direct flights from Dublin or Shannon to the US clear immigration in Ireland.

That's grand thanks, I presumed they would all be the same.
