Anyone know if an AIB Maestro Laser can be used to withdraw cash in the USA? Or would I be better using a credit card for cash withdrawals?

Natuarally it depends on the Bank\ATM you are withdrawing through but any one I have tried was fine with an Irish (PTSB & BOI) LASER.

Look for cirrus symbol on front/back.

Dont use CC for cash unless you've put credit on it, horrific rates.

i was told for my lazer (ulster bank) the charges range from €12-€25 per transaction, so if you have to use it, take out the MAX

    travellers checks TBH

If you are going to use it, do what the others have said and take out what you need as there are hefty charges for withdrawals.

The charge wasnt that high for me - about 3euros. but depends on your bank some charge around 2% commission. Also all the atms charge you for the use of them - $0.99 up to bout $2.50

Cirrus, Maestro, and Mastercard all have the same logos just different colours so heres me guessing that they use the same systems. My card hasnt link or plus on the back.

Just load the money onto your CC and use that, afaik Link is used in the UK but I'm not 100% sure.

Ruu you're not insured for any credit you put on your card. So if you put on €1000 and its stolen then you're screwed

Ring AIB banking service, open all night.

Oh wasn't aware of that at all. :) Also OP you might want to check about your daily withdrawal limits if you have one and to see if it will be applied when you are abroad so you can know how much you can take out at one time.

Link works in the UK, Cirrus In the US.

Make sure you have a cirrus card so if you run short of money it can be put in your account and you can withdaw it.

Thanks folks. AIB say that Link is the replacement for Cirrus and will be OK with most ATMs. They couldn't say what the charges might be.......

Talking out their arses tbh..but the principle is right. For cash withdrawals

    Link = UK
Plus = Rest of Word (any ATM with a Visa Logo)
Cirrus/Maestro = Rest of World (any ATM with a Mastercard Logo).

So yes, you should be fine using the Maestro card in ATM's in the US.

I was able to use mine no bother- even in shops.

Check the charges printed on the machines, varies between $1.50 to $4.00 per transaction. Machines in hotels tend to be more expensive. Some machines charge a % of the transaction also. This will be printed on the machine or displayed on the screen before you confirm the transaction.

You could use your credit card for purchases, should work nearly everywhere over there.

    Enjoy your holiday :)

Youre talking out of your ass.

I had a bank link card (not laser) with the link logo on the back, which worked everywhere in the USA - the US ATMs also have LINK logos on them as well as visas.

    Ok, I'll try again..

I'd be quite surprised if US machines at Link branding on them as Link is a UK based network (www.link.co.uk).

Now, a card with only a Link logo may work abroad, simply because it doesn't really matter what logo is on the card, but what the bank enabled the card to do.

Older Banklink cards only had the Link logo on them (some older ones don't even have that), but when AIB enabled Banklink cards to be used on the Visa Plus network, the older cards were included (despite not having a Plus logo on them).

as far as i know, and stand to be corrected.... even if you top up your credit card with a plus balance, i.e. using your own money, you are still charged a cash advance charge, just not the interest....

i apologise, i was thinking of the 'PLUS' thing on the back of them, not the link

the plus thing is all over the bank links in the us of a :)

    Just for some info.
If your link card has either the plus or maestro on the card it should work in the U.S. at atms. Your bank may need to activate the card for international usage.

You might be able to use at some stores in the US by hitting the debit button and entering your pin. It will not work in some stores that take atm/debit card. This reason for this. Some merchants do not use the International Maestro or International Plus debit network.

I would try to use atms that will not eat your card.
