Link here, but don't be surprised, as there is only a locator map, but at least it has dawned on the councillors etc, that Newlands cross is going to be a hell ride when the Naas upgrade is completed.

I agree completely. Its the weak link.

This subject has been around SDCC and its predecessor for a long time. In 1995, a timescale of 15 years was put forward for grade speration at this junction. (around the time of initial upgrade to 3 lane dual carraigeway to Rathcoole) It hasn't been mentioned since, or until now. Im still amazed the Gov and the NRA haven't been more vocal about it.

Yep it used to amaze me, when the news of the M50 upgrade, Limerick/Cork routes getting the go ahead or getting the ribbon cut. The minister would almost put emphisis on - A complete HDDC/ Motorway from M50 to Portlaoise etc... when Newland's cross was never mentioned.
This line was said a lot " a free flowing motorway/DC from Dundalk to west of Portlaoise.

When the Naas upgrade began, the minister's said on the day, that with the upgrade of the M50 and Naas improvement all the bottlenecks will be removed etc, and take a half an hour of all journeys to south... but really?

Naas to Newlands will be like driving in another country, but Newlands will remind of us home..

Another junction which no one ever mentions is N4 Kennelsforth road. It's the N4 junction in the middle of Palmerstown, here.

Not as bad as Newlands, but still.

Lucan lights tend to get most of the blame on the N4, though Palmerstown lights and Iffy Valley can be just as bad.

Metro west will have a say in this development. It's due to be elevated across the junction at this point. Id imagine the golf course shall be losing some of it's land. Would it be asking too much if both road and rail works were designed and built in tandem with each other?

It's going to be difficult though as it won't be cheap or easy to manovre the heavy traffic while under construction. Though Elevated would make sense as it would have little impact on the side roads that intersect onto it.

There is no other option but to take land south of the junction. On the Clondalkin side of the cross - is practically built up with Bewerlys hotel and is already developing it's last track of land there. SDCC are stupidly in the process of construcing a bus lane:rolleyes: ..ffs. wait... it will be dug up soon..

It would be a good idea to put a few loops or half a cloverleaf on the south side(land taken from the golf course) as this will allow all free flow links from Belgard and onto Naas outbound etc and especially the heavier traffic coming from redcow onto Belgard and to Clondalkin roads. This will be the heaviest movementd of the new carriegway and where lenghty delays occur at present. Leave the north side as it is, with parellel long slips on either end of the elevated N7. Unless there is money to carry this traffic on a third level flyover...

The right angle junctions should be anilated or destroyed between there and Monastery road, there is to many accesses and it's already having drastic affect to the speed of this section of route.

Hope this make sense:D I'm sure the engineers would have an idea of my picture of the new interchange...

Being on the City side of the M50 means that it will not be upgraded. It's in a residential area too.
