The backlight is gone on a friends HP laptop. Where would he go about getting it sorted?

If its still under warranty call HP support and see what they say.A back light in its self isn't too expensive (assuming thats all thats wrong) but it can indeed be very very tricky and annyoing opening up a TFT from a laptop and replacing it not too mention time consuming.Even if you brought it to a computer repair company it'll cost you labour wise plus they would have to order the part,or just try and sell you a replacement screen. Either way unless its under warranty its gonna cost a bit....

Was talking to him last night. He said PCworld told him its the backlight. Another repair shop said he has a cracked motherboard!

its probably just the inverter board which steps up the voltage for the tube in the backlight. Can you see a feint image of the screen action?

Strip it down and throw the part number of the inverter board up on ebay.
