I have it installed on my MAcBook Pro. I have not installed bootcamp so can't compare.

However, Parrallels is excellent! Works exactly like I always expected VirtualPC to work except light years faster. On dual screen, it's a pleaseure, mac on one screen, PC on the other. Completely transparent and you can even copy/paste between the two environments.

It does hog any optical media inserted but so far, no troubles running general office apps, web browsing, web dev (dreamweaver) etc. Fast, simple, elegant.

Anyone know if parallels is as quick as using boot camp?

As stated, I have not used boot camp. However, running Windows XP on my MacBook pro in parallels is as snappy as on any of my other PCs. It boots very quickly.

From my own research, apparently there is a bit of a speed difference if you do a direct compare but this is alleviated by sufficient allocation of memory.

In my opinion, any small speed differential is offset by the luxury of not having to boot into Windows and back to OSX.

Another thing to note. Parallels cannot share the Boot Camp copy of XP, meaning you will need two XP licences if you want to use both. I mailed them about this and tech staff said they were working on a solution for the future.
