Best way to ask and get a pay rise?

I've decided I'm going to ask for a pay rise in work. I've been with my company a year and a half. In the past year and half my work load has increased by at least half if not double, and I've proven to my boss and colleagues that I'm well able for the extra work and pressure. I get on well with my boss and with everyone in my office. I know boss has noticed how I have been coping with the extra work and hope he will look favourably on giving me a raise.

I've kinda got a list together of a few accomplishments in my current position, for example times where i've used my initiative, completed important projects on time, helped out with certain tasks etc. But would I look a bit scatty if I brought a list with me when meeting my boss?

Basically I would just like to let my boss know I feel deserving and would feel appreciated by a nice raise. Although I get on with and respect my boss, he's quite sound (I've never had a sound boss before either..) I'm a bit nervous of asking for more money...

I'd like to know whats the best way to get the most money? Any tips?

well you definately have the right idea about keeping a list of you accomplishments and increases in your workload. By showing this you can both see clearly where you have made significant improvements.

All I can say is go in and have exactly what you want to say in your mind and if your boss is a decent sort he/she will see where you are coming from.

By the way do you not get a review every year?? I thought that is the norm.....

also - if you dont ask you dont get! I have found that out the hard way, and always be prepared for a compromise.

Don't take the list, but know the key points. And basicly pull your boss aside some day and ask!

You're in a much stronger position if they suspect you might leave also, you should at least mention that you wouldn't be comfortable staying in your current job at current pay if that is indeed the truth.

I wouldn't mention anything about leaving as the boss may think you are threatening him/her, and nobody likes to be threatened.

Don't go in on a Monday. Wednesday to Friday are the best days to ask, although people have a tendancy to forget things over the weekend.

Do have in your mind all the key points off your list.
Be positive and don't talk crap.

    Good luck

Probably better to ask for a review rather than a raise, and make sure that there is some procedure in the future for the same. Gives the boss time to think and then request a meeting about it. Telling him/her that you are planning to leave is not the ideal way when there is no structure in place either, you are in a tight bind if he decides to tell you he cant afford it.

hey everyone thanks very much for the replies.

I've asked my boss for a review and we're gonna talk about it next week. He seemed grand about it and kind of impressed (I think?) that I had the nerve to ask.

I wont be saying that I would leave or look for a better paying job, as asides from the possibility of looking like a threat I dont want to leave this job, as I enjoy working here.

So, here's hoping it will go well next week. Hope I can get all my points accross and not forget anything or start rambling..!
