    Hi,

I have suffered with anxiety for many years and i was once given a weeks supply of a tablet called xanax, Now this was like a life saver to me, for the whole week i had no anxiety and i did not feel at all panicy. The problem is that i cannot get another prescription from my doctor because he is worried about my health but i have made the conscious decision that i need to take this medication as it makes me live my life alot better. If i do go to a new doctor i am sure he will not prescribe me until he does loads of tests at my expense. So I am just asking for anyone who has any suggestions or advice they can give me.
    Thanks

(BTW i am 19 yrs of age)

Why wont he give you a further prescription? Maybe you should see another doctor and get a second opinion. Give more details, Im not sure what advice to give.

Xanax (Alprazolam) is not candy. If you wish to obtain a prescription, you should do it honestly, by explaining things to your doctor. You should also ask for other help.

I don't thing Xanax is suitable for medium-long term use (article suggests only under strict psychitric care).

Is there any reason why you're anxious all the time?

but i have made the conscious decision that i need to take this medication as it makes me live my life alot better.

This is a worrying thing to be saying. You've made a conscious decision that you need to take this medication? Surely the advice of a professional should be listened to. If your doctor is reluctant to refill your prescription surely there's a valid reason.

Have you talked with him about the possibility of lowering the dosage so you come off it gradually? I can't imagine a doctor proposing that you 'cold turkey' it.

Also - relying purely on medication to sort out anxiety problems is going to lead to trouble. Have you had counselling at all to complement the medication? Has your doctor ever suggested this?

if your really tryin to get the medication you could try getting it off the net but be very very careful.and ask your doctor if you really need it.self medication is dangerous

Self-medication is 'so' not the way to go.

There is a reason why these drugs are not freely available.
Go back to your original doctor and talk to him/her. If it was a doctor who prescribed the Xanax (you just said you were 'given' them), and the doctor is concerned about the continued use of Xanax, there are other options.

It's not really very safe to switch doctors when you have presumably built up a history and relationship with your original doctor. Together you can hopefully address your anxiety which seems to be the main problem.

hey, fellow anxiety sufferer here, 21 so I hope you think I can relate.
I know taking medication seems like it solves all the problems but it only masks them. your anxiety is still there and will be until you try and figure why you suffer from it and take steps to prevent it. and this is something no medication can do.
Your doctor wont prescribe you more xanax because it is only intended for short term needs. You can see by your post how you can become dependent on it and that is no help to you. It is only intended to get you over the intial hump so that you relax enough to explore the reasons behind your anxiety. It wont solve the issues for.
Talk to you doctor they will be able to advice other sorts of treatment to help you. I know how horrible anxiety can feel but believe me medication isnt quite the magic solution it sometimes appears to be.

This post was high on the "how to poison yourself on hte internet" count.

Gettign drugs surriptitiously is not the brightest of ideas. You may never know what you are getting on the net, if it shows up at all. Is it a placebo? Is it something else completely? What is the quality control like (do the tablets have the correct dosage)? Will you get double dosage one day and none the next?

I suspect Customs might also have issues with individuals importing controlled drugs.

You really need to get a second opinion from a different doc. Prescription drugs are serious business with potential side effects not to take lightly.

There's a herbal tablet you could try called 'Kalms'. I used to get panic attacks and took these for a while and they helped. They're herbal aswell so they won't damage your liver the way other medications might. Also, you could get a bottle of 'Rescue Remedy'. I always have rescue remedy on my bedside locker in case I get panicky. Anytime I've had an attack it's been at night time.

I agree that medication only masks the problem though. You should figure out why you're feeling so anxious so you can overcome it without the need for any medication. I stopped getting panic attacks once I figured out what the problem was. I removed the source of anxiety from my life.

Even tho you feel you need the xanax, your doc is the professional here. He doesnt think its right for you, you should listen to him and ask him to recommend an alternative to you. Not necessarily medication at all. Hopping from doc to doc in order to prolong access to a drug thats only intended for short term use is not the thing to do here. After all, its only covering up whats wrong and a temporary fix. It could leave you with worse problems long term. And buying off the net or otherwise illegally would be really, really stupid.

Your doctor did not refil the script because that drug is a benzo, a highly addictive drug. I'm sure you felt good whilst on it, as it will basically sedate your anxiety. The withdrawal symptoms off benzos are extremely problematic, go back to your doctor explain your situation, and seek some therapy, benzos only treat the symptoms not the cause, best of luck with it

If you can't back that up, don't make the statement. And don't make medical-type suggestions.

Just because something is herbal, doesn't make it suitable for everyone, especially if they are using other medication also.

Rescue remedy is very good for some reason - it might be psychological who knows? I think I've heard of those Kalms too. :)

I've been prescribed xanax for three weeks, and I'm going to be straight here, it doesn't touch my anxiety, the reasons for me is I'm going through a beveavement, well, it slightly numbed it for the first week but now it does nothing, maybe these tablets are a waste of time, but to the orignal poster, my doctor has offered me counselling alongside, which I took with gratitude, did your doctor offer the same, and why did they give a presciption for one week? Have they offered you counselling?

I was on xanax for a while. But it is only for short term it does have side effects. trust your doctor.

It contains valerian. It is widely stocked in ANY chemist... without prescription
It can be hit and miss.

Xanax is highly highly highly addictive, that the reason its not given out like sweets.

Even if you did manage to get some off a dr now, you'll have to come off it at some stage and you'll pay the price then.
for the whole week i had no anxiety and i did not feel at all panicy.

Sedatives numb reality, everyone needs a break now & then, yeah, but do you really want to live in a drug induced dream-world for the coming future?
but i have made the conscious decision that i need to take this medication as it makes me live my life alot better.

Really really worried by this statement:eek:

How about making the decision to go out there and make life better for yourself?
If you're having major anxiety problems perhaps you might think about counselling or relaxation therapy? Theres usually plenty of groups around.

    Good luck

When I took Kalms the pharmacist assured me that they do not damage your liver. I didn't say herbal remedies suit everybody but they may help the OP more than a highly addictive medication like Xanax. My dad takes Xanax consistently but he is in hospital under medical supervision. Kalms worked for me when I was feeling anxious with no side effects, I was only trying to offer the OP some helpful advice.

OP - a friend of mine was once prescribed Xanax, as it happened incorrectly, for a condition she suffers with. it she was only on it for a short amount of time but because Xanax is so incredibly addictive, she found it unbearable to come off. not only that it left terrible side affects.

i suppose what im getting at is that this is a very serious drug, and the fact that ur doc wont prescribe it for you may be for your own benefit?
