Import Digital Camera from US (SAVE €221!!!)

I have my eye on a Panasonic Limux TZ1, however, I'm not prepared to fork out €450 to an Irish company when I see the same camera for sale @ €229 in the USA (NewEgg.com).

With VAT the total is the princely sum of €277. Are there any other types of duty that I have to pay and how are they calculated.

If customs don't charge me VAT/Duty how do I live up to my civic responsibilities?:)

They don't ship outside the US.

Thanks Ruu, I though I was in for some big savings.

I also noticed the same camera at these places.

    Circuit City:
    $296 €234

    PC Connection:
    $315 €249

Does anybody know what duty I'm liable for (besides VAT @ 21%) if I can manage to buy from the US?

I found the following on the DHL website and I assume it applies to most shipping methods and companies abroad.
Gifts from one private individual to another up to the value of €45 and commercial shipments up to €23 are usually exempt from VAT & Duty. In all cases if the shipment is a gift then the accompanying proforma invoice should clearly state 'Gift' along with the usual details.

For one off shipments where the value of the goods is less than €250 and the Import Duty due is less than €10 then an exemption from VAT and Duty may also be granted to customers who are VAT registered.

Remember that you not only get charged VAT and import duty on the price of the goods, they then put VAT and import duty on the shipping costs, and to add insult to injury the likes of UPS then charge you another 10 euros or something to colelct it AND then charge VAT on that!

I ordered a DVD set from the US two years ago, was about 45 euros, but the shipping was about 30 dollars. I ended up being stung for about 30 euros.

I have no problem with paying duty and VAT on the goods themselves but these extra charges and charging VAT on a service that originated in another country does seem a bit much to me.

Still, if the goods simply are not available in Ireland then it might be worth it for something you really want.

if you are willing to wait a bit, you can wait til someone you know is going over to the US for a visit and have them bring it back - I know a few who have done that. Though, they have to be careful as well, supposedly Customs are checking flights from the US more for people bringing back lots of goods for them and there friends. Should be okay though
