    Going to answer my own question here:

    VAT = 21%
    VAT on classic car parts = 13.5%

    Woo!

    yep, and then 3.75% on the total for import duty, so you save quite a bit

    100 order
    + VAT 121
    = import 4.54
    total 125.54

    now
    100 order
    + vat 113
    +import4.24
    117.24

    Can you quote where you got that information from. I got charged regular rates bringing parts in for my 79 chevy. While a 79 isn't classed as vintage I believe the same parts are used on a 75/76 which is ,ie the parts are vintage/veteren even though the van isn't. Might try and get a refund.

    I'm no expert but wouldn't it depend on if teh parts or new or second hand? I think that newly manufactured parts - reagrdless of teh age of teh vehicle they are intended for - would get teh full VAT price.

    I would say the same. If the parts are NEW, regardless if they're for a 1913 Bentley or a 1975 Mercedes, or end up as the reel of a garden hose for example (see other thread :D ) , the full rate of VAT will be charged because the VAT is charged on the Part itself, not where or what it is going to end up...

    Only if the parts are 2nd hand or NOS, they will charge the lesser rate....

    When I bought my wheels for the Mustang the duty was half what I expected via fedex or was it ups.On the other hand every thing that has been shipped via USPS and an post have been full wack, they are usually named as car parts, not classic, which is probably why I've been screwed.

    Oh just reread about nos. Would the lesson be perhaps to use a more expensive carrier rather than post, An post don't seem to bother checking and just automatically charge 21%, where as the ups/fedman who phoned me about the wheels did check and charged 13.5%. I though I was just lucky at the time.He also mentioned if I remember correctly that if the car had historical value, probably JFK being shot in it or something, the parts would be vat free.Anyone hear about before.
