Obsolescence and digital music players

    Hi

I was wondering if regular posters here have any thoughts on the best digital music player to buy if you plan on keeping it for as long as possible, assuming it doesn't break.

I often come across terms like 'planned obsolescence', particularly when talking about computers and software ie. products updated and rendered obsolete by makers for no other reason that to force consumers to buy the latest model, even if the old one is working perfectly ok.

Given that the ipod keeps getting up dated every day, it seems, would it be better to buy a general Mp3 player or one that is readily compatible with Windows software? Or is any ipod a good long term bet?

Other factors i would consider is the ease at which players can be repaired, which again puts ipod in a bad light as i keep hearing batterys are hard to replace and expensive.

    cheers in advance
