I did about 100km of driving at the weekend (in Dublin - at night) and didn't see one check point. I noticed that pub car parks were as full as ever. But hopefully that will all change..................soon..........?

3904 tested at 676 checkpoints doesn't sound like much of a batting average to me - less than 7 tested per checkpoint?

I could suggest a couple of positions 200 yards or so from a couple of northside pubs where the pickings would be much better.

200 miles done at the weekend... only passed one speedcheck...

could have been drunk as a skunk and got away with it.... (i wasn't btw, can't stand people who drunk and drive)

I reckon if a squad car drove into a pub car park, in full view of all the smokers outside, prowled around as if looking at all the cars, exited the car park then parked up outside on the public road, I'd say the car park would be empty for the next while. All close enough to closing time so as not to waste Garda resources too much.

    Just a thought.................

    Nope...
They seem to be pulling trucks at the moment in Galway...beyond that I've seen no check points in the usual spots... Apart from the usual lot getting pulled fer speeding outside my door'ish

I've never been breathalyzed in my entire 30+ years of driving in UK, Germany, Holland and now Ireland, and I don't really expect that to change any time soon to be honest.

True - I'm almost 20 years driving and while I've been stopped at checkpoints, I've never been breathalysed. I do a lot of late night driving at the weekends too so, imo, it's the age old enforcement/resources argument.

Got pulled on Friday night and was made walk the road. However there was a huge festival on in the town where I'm from and the cops were crawling all over the roads out of there.

Drove from Portlaoise to Dublin airport thursday night and back down, Portlaoise to Doolin, Co Clare via Limerick and Ennis friday, Doolin to Galway and back saturday and then Doolin to Portlaoise sunday. Portlaoise to the airport and back yesterday. The only cops I seen the entire time were parked outside Limerick garda station. Not once did I ever see another squad car.

    We need way more cops.

Do they ever make people say the alphabet backwards?
You see it on American TV

I'm not sure I could do that fully sober, never mind drunk

watch "The man with two brains"

    "GET OUT OF THE CAR,

STRETCH OUT YOUR ARMS AND TOUCH YOUR NOSE WITH YOUR FINGER.

    HMM.

    NOW WALK THIS WHITE LINE.

    HALT!

    COME BACK.
    ON YOUR HANDS!

    ONE HAND.

NOW DO ROLL OVER, TURN OVER, AND FLIP-FLOP.

    ALL RIGHT.

NOW JUGGLE THESE, DO A TAP DANCE, AND SING THE CATALINA MAGDALENA
    LUPENSTEINER WALLABEINER SONG."

"GODDAMN, YOUR DRUNK TESTS ARE HARD."

    now thats a drink-drive test!

Drove about 300 miles over the weekend through 8 counties and saw a few garda cars but no checkpoints. I'd have to agree about placing a few checkpoints near some rural based pubs and some around towns too.

Also saw a huge number of people driving while on mobile phones.. some people dont give a f*ck

yeah i have to agree with toxicP here

I don't know is it an Irish thing but why do we have to be grabbed by the scruff of the neck and forced to obey new laws.

Why don't people just go "talking on a mobile is both illegal and dangerous, i better stop doing it"

how come the smoking ban was a success (relatively) compared to our road use.

I too drove for bout 100 miles over the weekend, Killaloe to Limerick to Ennis to Limerick to Killaloe to Limerick again, didn't see one garda checkpoint but saw loads of people on the phone

Where the blue lights from the cop car made him think he had arrived at another club? :)

Didn't see one cop on the roads around Limerick..... Apparently there were alot around Ennis in Co. Clare.

    Yep thats the one! :D

The only Garda enforcement I usually see is them camped out under the Damastown turnoff on the N3 or similar spots with a speed camera.

Certainly didn't see any at the weekend - unless you count the off-duty cop in a Focus who was tailgating me in heavy traffic at 80kph on the N4 and then had the neck to tell me off at the next set of lights about "hogging the outside lane" (I/we was moving faster than the inside lane which was also back-to-back) and that I was "lucky" he was off-duty or I'd be getting points.
When I asked him why he was tailgating me however he typically had no answer, just mumbled something about the Rules of the Road and went back to his car.

Typical attitude tho.. some of them think a badge gives the right to break the law themselves, and intimidate and harass the general public just to feed their egos!

Nearly 400 miles done over the weekend myself, travelling to Athboy, Mullingar, Tullamore, Banagher..... Barely a police on the road, let alone a checkpoint.
