Thought you were talking sub 2K. There's no reason to have a crap car if you've got 5K!

What's max engine size? You saw "low litre" I would consider 1.2 low but some would say 1.4 is big!

Do you need - good economy, cheap insurance, loadcarrying etc?

My first car: Mazda MX3 1.5. 225,000 kms on the clock, and still going strong.

I just bought my first car (having used the Dad's Mondeo for years) and I'm really happy with it, even if its a bit on the small side!
Fiat Punto EXL, 01, 1.2 litre, two door, paid 4.2k for it. Great buy.:)

Thankyou for replies. Max engine size 1.5 , price: anything lower than 5000€ is excellent (the cheaper the better). The corolla sounds good, but I can't stand the look of the blue one posted here (it's the lights), however I have seen nicer corollas. 5 doors is a bonus but 3 is fine.
    Thanks

    What about Hondas?

I just bought a mint '98 1.4i Civic with low mileage for 3500. My insurance is great too! And you know the Honda legacy..

Poor at carrying bikes, you're gonna need a roofrack or something.

There are lots of good cars out there. To help narrow my search I usually dig out car mags from a few years ago, go to the back and see how the magazines rate them. Also, What Car magazine among other mags sometime do pull outs entitled "Best 2nd car buys". Perhaps you have some old mags too.

My 1st car was the 5 year old 1.25 Fiesta Zetec as recommended as best car for under 3000 pounds in one of those pull out 'best 2nd hand buy' suppliments.

I believe magazines are a reliable source of opinion.
