Yes they're universale and there are no 'lite games', all the existing DS titles work on the Lite, but you'll need a step-up power converter.

What's the point though? I don't think you'll save very much compared to buying it here.

Yes it's region free, yes it plays any DS games (and old GBA games).

You may have to buy a charger for it over here for appropriate voltages, 10-15 euro.

{EDIT} Dunno how much you would save, if your going for just a DS and not a Lite, then probably not much. I would suggest picking up a Lite over there and that may be a worthy saving, although I am not really sure. Why not go for the Lite?

The same games go into the DS and the DS Lite.

The DS Lite is just slightly smaller with a brighter screen.

Both are also region free so a game from the US or Japan will work no problem in a EU DS. But you may run into problems if you're trying to do a multiplayer game from a US cart with a EU cart of the same game.... but most games have a single cart option anyway.

Why wouldyou be playing with your friends over 100m away from you?
If they're that far away, you'd need to use Nintendo Wifi, not DS to DS, and of course that'll only work if the game is enabled for Nintendo Wifi gaming(not a lot are).

With regards to saving money in America you will definitely get the DS lite and the games far cheaper in America. When I'm in the states I make sure I buy every game I consider getting since it's so much cheaper. The only thing to look out for is sales tax. There's a sales tax in Vegas.

Yeah, it should be cheaper in theory - what about getting it duty-free in the airport there? Duty-free shopping still exists when travelling outside the EU doesn't it?

I think you misread something. There are two methods of playing multiplayer DS games:
    • Directly between DSs (in an "ad-hoc" sort of wireless network) with a range of about 10-20 metres
    • Through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (WFC), where you connect to the internet via 802.11b somehow (e.g. a wireless router at home, or the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB adaptor + a PC with a broadband connection) and play against anyone in the world - some titles may have regional/language restrictions though. Range between your DS and your wireless router/gateway/whatever is around 30m indoors.
