The Likelihood of Never

    Fingers detecting
    Grass stain-coloured bruises
    Underneath my skin
    Evidence of severe molecular smashing

A riot of colour and hurt
The combination of a wayward car door
    And my interfering shoulder
The recipe for this latest body bashing

    Well-worn vulnerability veers me
Off the set, safe path again
    Making it difficult
To flick off my clumsy attempts
    At out-doing desolation

    The thought of trumping fate
    Pocketing your queen
    Touching you with a typewriter
    Absurd

After all this borrowing of narrative heaven
    Your words are kites
Soaring skyward only to come tumbling down
    Around a bunch of string
I pull and grasp too tightly

Every time I go over the lines
    Tangling intent and tangibility
The sound of lift-off deafens my tongue
    Wraps twine around my eyes
As my satisfied solar plexus sings

The tips of my sadness pause
    Underneath unpainted fingernails
Just waiting for a free keyboard and a second chance
To uncoil all this out at your feet

    Stubbornly clutching at the giddiness
Of an overstimulated synapse living in the past
    Beautiful hypothetical possibility
    Never realized now
