OK i am upgrading my 20" imac for a Core Duo model. However i'm not sure whether i should go for a Mac book with 2Gig core duo or the new 20" imac with same.

The Imac is more expensive, but more powerful. But the book is obviously portable.

Anyone have any suggestions? How does the Book compare in performance....expecially given that its graphics cannot be upgraded.

Any help? Anyone made similar choice? Oh yeah and can anyone recommend a good place to buy in dublin area?

I wouldn't go near the Macbook – too many problems regarding noise and heat have been reported with this first generation. Plus it has no graphics card – the graphics are integrated onto the CPU.

Whichever you decide on definitely wait a month or two if possible, as a major CPU upgrade is due for both machines.

Hehe... you could try upgrading the CPU in the iMac yourself :p

*Tip* buy your RAM from Crucial-don't waste money!

Well, it has been done with Mac minis, and the iMac's CPU isn't supposed to be soldered down...

Yea but does the MOBO support the intel Chipset?

Anyway can anyone explain to me the difference between Coreduo and Core2duo?

    CoreDuo is basically a dual-core Pentium M.
    Core2Duo is a new chip.

Core2Duo OWNS CoreDuo (and everything else).

Core2Duo not available in Macs yet :p

But why is core2duo actually better? Are they not based on the same arcitecture?

Does anyone know when core2duo might be put into the imac/macbook series?

Core 2 Duo, is the new range of Processors (codenamed Conroe) they're due out tomorrow IIR. They're completely taking over from Pentium IV and Pentium D chips, have two internal cores. These chips run at a much lower clock speed, so they are very welcome to being overclocked.

Core Duo, is a dual core chip designed to replace the Pentium M, its a mobile processor.

I'd say it'll be a while before we see Core 2 Duo in a mac, since intel chips have only been put into them.
