There are plenty of threads on this already. Have a read through or do a search.

Personally, I wouldn't book on Tripadvisor, although I do subscribe to it and write reviews whenever I can. It's great for opinions and once you've used it a while, you can decode the reviews to get a good idea of what the hotels are like. From my experience the most objective reviews are written by Irish, Canadians and Northern English.

i have looked around (search feature is not much use). in another thread they suggest the comfort inn (over $200 a night for a very medicore hotel).

anyone got anything else to suggest?? we are going in 6 weeks and need a hotel for 7 nights and really only have about 1200 or so

You've left it pretty late to book if you're on a budget...

I've had a quick look on lastminute.ie and expedia.co.uk and not come up with anything spectacular. Most stuff under $200 per night is on the Upper West Side or Columbus (far end of Central Park), so what you'd be saving will be well spent on transport unless you're willing to walk the length of Central Park just to get to the edge of downtown.

On Expedia I did find a heavily discounted room in the Ramada Plaza New Yorker, just around the corner from Penn Station for Stg£680 approx, which is less than what you've budgeted, but you'll need to book it sharpish. Don't expect much though... It's a chain hotel and only rated 3.1 out of 5.

    Lunchtime... Hope that helps!

    :D

I think there was one called the belvedere, great location for getting around and grand for the price.

*Edit: Sorry its the Bedford http://bedfordhotelnewyork.com/gallery.asp

Try http://www.cosmohotel.com/info/index.html Its in Tribeca, right beside the subway and 5 minutes ride from Times Square. Its a block or two away from the Ground Zero and within walking distance of Little Italy and Chinatown. There are a fair few pubs around too.

We stayed there at christmas and its clean & comfortable. The rooms aren't that big but nowhere in NY is. We booked through this website:
