How to get from Cork to Dorset?

    Hey all,

I need to get to Dorset on Thursday to pick up a car! I'm living in Cork so my first obvious choice was to fly from Cork to Bournemouth as I think this is the closest airport to Shaftesbury (the place where im collecting the car!)

I've tried finding flights but there doesn't seem to be any!! Does anyone know of an alternative route? Maybe a different airport closeby with easy access to a train that could take me to Shaftsebury?? I am seriously clueless when it comes to the UK.. I don't know where anything is!! I am looking at maps all day and can't seem to work something out!!

    Any help greatly appreciated!! Thanks

I'm so used to flights all over England for the football. I'm almost sure you could get a flight from Cork to Exeter or Newquay,Cornwall.

My boyfriend is from Dorset so what I usually did was fly with Ryanair to Bristol and get the train down. It usually takes about 2 hours or so and there is a direct route, so I would say thats your best bet!

http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/ is where you can look up train times, routes, costs etc.

    Hope this helps!

edit: Dublin to Bristol that is, I don't think they fly from cork, but an easy way around that is to get the aircoach from cork to dub - 12euros return! cant beat it

There is a regular service from Dublin to Bournemouth. Shaftesbury would be about 1 hour by taxi from Bournemouth Airport via A31 and A350.
    get the train down.

AFAIK Shaftesbury is not served by rail. The nearest station would be Gillingham.
get the aircoach from cork to dub -

Tell the driver when buying the ticket in Cork that you are going to Dublin Airport. The Cork service only goes to Dublin City but it is cheaper to get one ticket and transfer to the Airport Aircoach from the city centre.
    12euros return!

PS - I presume that a one way would be adequate if you are bringing back the car!

There aren't many good options for this trip, most of the flights from Cork to regional airports mid week are late afternoon.

At a few days notice they are also very expensive €150-200 one way.

I would advise AerLingus Cork to Heathrow, Tube from Heathrow to Waterloo (1 change required), Train from Waterloo to Gillingham.

From there get a taxi from Gillingham station to Shaftesbury which is approx 5 miles.

There is a 7.35 from Cork to Heathrow currently at €49+charges.

Train from Waterloo to Gillingham will cost £30.30 one way and it takes just under 2 hours. Trains are hourly at xx.20, if the flight is on time you should be able to catch the 10.20.

This is probably the best option - the other easiest alternatives are to fly from Dublin to Bournemouth with Ryanair or Dublin to Southampton (not sure about Cork to Southampton) with FlyBe and then train/bus/taxi combination to Shaftesbury.

On your way back it is the A303,M5,M4 to the ferry from Swansea/Pembroke/Fishguard.
