Hi guys. I'm working on a dell dimension 2400 right now and the psu has failed. I figure it's a standard ATX PSU, so any one will do to replace it, but I'd just like to confirm that.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes I believe its the standard ATX form factor.

Nice one Ruu. Though I have noticed that the 20 pin connector has no white -5V wire on it.....

Will that affect the standard ATX psu in any way?

    Thanks again

EDIT: What I mean is, will it blow up the motherboard if I plug a non-Dell psu in......? ;)

You should be fine with a non-Dell PSU, if you have any doubt give Dell a buzz just to be safe. I'm almost 100% sure it will work out. :)

Are you sure about that? Dont Dells use non-standard psu's so they can get more money from replacements?

I don't think so, I read somewhere that Dell PSUs made after 2000 are standard ATX. I might be wrong though.:)

Well since I'v got a 3 year old case and psu lying beside me which is none standard, I dont think so. At worst send me a pm, and I will mail at your exspense a replacment psu.

I'm not so sure even though you have one thats non-standard and won't work. I have replaced a good few Dells over the years and have yet to come across one that wouldn't work. There are a few who will argue on both sides. The OP knows to give Dell a call anyway before making up his mind, probably best thing to do. :)

edit:gave a computer shop in town a call, they reckon its hit and miss alot of the time, so there ya go. :)

Thanks Ruu. I think I'll chance it. But maybe tomorrow.

EDIT: Hey, I just noticed your new mod status. Or were you always a mod? Well, congrats if it is new.

No problem, in any case you probably will be able to get it working just a bit of extra required to sort it out. Hopefully the easier way.

Depends entirely on the model. Some Dells have standard PSU's some don't. My 4600 does. Ask on the Dell Talk forums, and do a search on 2400 PSU etc.

even if it doesnt you can get a cable to adapt any psu to a dell

My Dem 4800 (or whatever the hell model it was) had a DELL psu and I had to go via ebay for a new one. Which still works :)

Some of the dells have the 3.3V wires on a seperate connector.

You can use a normal atx psu by popping the wires out of the molex connector and into the connector shell from the dead psu.

Also, Dell are complete bas7ards for the fitting of the PSU's, and the power hole. Most standard holed are to the right, Dell's are to the left, thus, even though a standard PSU will power it, it won't fit.
