    Hi Guys,

I downloaded a file the other day and it was a .dmg file which I think is an disk image file but when I opened it it was mounted like a drive (which I presume is due to some application on my Mac) but it doesnt recognise the file in the image. Its listed as a exec type but when I try to run it Os X asks me what application I should use to open it. Any idea's?

.DMG files will always mount like that. Usually they are for installers or you just drag the application off the mounted drive and into your applictions folder.

What is the file type that is on the mounted drive?

Ive tried mounting the .dmg file and then dragging the application into the applications folder but no dice. I am told that there is no default application for the file type and asks me to choose one. As for the file type its not listed under get info (just the name of the file is). Preview shows a black screen and exec.

What is it?! You didn't just randomly download something off the net did you?

Is it Open Office by any chance? If so you need the developer tools.

Sounds like you've got the Virtual PC for Windows app as opposed to Virtual PC for Mac.

I was thinkin that myself Simon but wasnt sure coz I couldnt get the file extension info which is pretty crap. I would have expected more of OS-X.

Does anyone know is it possible to set windows to a certain size so that when they open they are not rediculously small?

Are you d/ling these from Limewire by any chance ? Forget it, waste of time.

Also which Mac are you trying to run VPC on, if it's the iBook G3 it'll be horrible to use. The iMac G5 will be usable for basic tasks like Office etc. It won't work on an Intel iMac AFAIK.

Call me, you have my number, and I'll try to help you out.;)

    Hey Zen,

Yep its from Limewire but Im running it on my G5 iMac. If I had an Intel iMac there wouldnt be a problem I dont think.

I eventually got one that seems to be for a Mac and its now working (Win XP installed) but the application I wanted to get working isnt but I think thats due to the fact that its coded in C so its freakin out when run in a Virtual Environment.

Im hoping to get a virtual linux machine installed and use the Linux version of the application but we will see how that goes. Have you run a virtual linux machine inside OS-X before?

I've used Virtual PC for Win98 SE, Windows XP Pro, Mandrake 9 and Fedora Core 3 - all worked without a hitch albeit slowly.

What's the app you're trying to run ? What version of VPC are you running ? Did you know you can download a demo of VPC 7 from its new owners - Microsoft ?

Theoretically there should be no difference between an Intel and G5 when running the same app or dealing with certain filetypes.

    Hey Zen,

The App is Treepad (www.treepad.com) do you have a virtual machine you can possibly do a test run of the freeware version on?

Im running VPC=7 and it gives me an error every time.

    Hey Zen,

I didnt know there was a free demo. I must download it and see if it makes any difference. I will probably be buying a copy of Virtual PC as Paralells doesnt support PPC architecture. :-(

Don't bother I've tried it and it doesn't work with your app either. I'm going to try a few things and I'll get back to you on it.

@PDD: I see that Treepad is being planned as a Mac app sometime this year. There's a program called Jreepad available here. Would this help you while you wait for a genuine mac version ?

    Hi Zen,

Yep I saw that and Jreepad is very limited so Ive decided to switch over to a wiki for the time being and see how that goes. I should get most of the functionality from a wiki.
