Media Centre crashing

    Hi,

I have installed Media Centre 2005 on my laptop and it all worked fine initially but then when I installed update rollup 2 and .net framework 1.1 it started to crash when I would try to exit a dvd that was playing to return to the main window.

There would be a popup saying it had generated an error with process id etc. now i have had a look at the web and apparently there are a few instances of media centre crashing while trying to carry out repetitive tasks.

I have Service Pack 2 installed but I was wondering if anyone had any advice on whether their is a patch available for this problem.

    Thanks

are you fully patched up to date right now?
if not that should be your first steating point.

afaik, there should not be mulitple instances of media centre running,
so try to fiugre outwhy that is happening.

finally, mce, by its very nature of not letting you do much,
    is notoriously stable.
the main problemm comes from 3rd party apps freaking out and being badly coded.
check you add/remove programs for anything not direclty to media centre and ask yourself "why is that there"

run msconfig and see whats runnong on startup,
consider disabling things like real time virus scanners and so on to free up resources.

    all the usual pc stuff.

Basically as far as I can see all is well with media center without rollup 2 but then when rollup 2 is installed it crashes when I try to stop a video to return to main menu , try to x the window etc.

It isnt the installation of .net framework that is causing the problem cause I have them installed right now with media centre basic and all is well.

Its not any of the extensions causing trouble cause I have uninstalled transcode 360 and the media centre extender for my 360.

I was misunderstood when I said "instances" earlier I didnt mean that I had multiple instances of mce running I meant I have found many forums with people with similar problems but none of their remedies have worked.

There is a catalog of known problems after installing Update Rollup 2 at this webpage but I dont see anything that exactly matches your problem.

But this particular one may be worth a go as it mentions a critical process failure as a symptom after installing update roll up 2.

Did you try re-installing your DVD decoder ?

And do you have .NET 2.0 installed ?
