    Hi all,

I Have just upgraded my pc,

the New System is: Hiper 580watt psu, Abit K8N Sli MB, AMD 4000+ CPU, 7600 GT GPU, 1 GB Ram, 80 G HDD, CD-Rom, DVD Drive.

Now the Ram and HDD + Drives are from my previous dell machine.

When the machine boots up, it gets as far s the windows logo screen and then i get a blue screen with an error "Stop 0x0000007e(0xc0000005, 0xf77e0750, 0xf79eb42c, 0xf79eb128)" Now i this to me that it looks like a conflict of some sort. I have all the old ati drivers removed, and as is can see all drivers are MS signed and up to date..

Can anyone shed some light on this please.... Im desparate

This could mean a number of things. Is your previous RAM compatible with your new machine? Have you just got the one stick, or 2x512mb?

No, I thought that wa sonly really to be used only if you couldnt boot into safe mode, but i can do that, is the recover tool easy to use?

Its fairly easy to use, it was one of the articles related to that particular stop message located in the MS Knowledge Base. Link for the Windows XP Recovery Console.

If you can get into safe mode then it's more than likely a driver conflict issue. What was the last driver/software you installed before the problem arose? You could try uninstalling it in safe mode ....

It could be damaged RAM but most likely a driver issue as the previous poster pointed out. Also if you use System Restore, you can try and rollback before the problem started. I think you can either use System Restore in the command line or in Safe Mode.

You see im not sure, I was having IDE problems loading in safe mode but they seem to be sorted, the only driver was the Nvidia Drviers, Nforce Chipset etc.

try uninstall them. At least you'll know if it was those drivers or not. When you installed the drivers did you install the nvidia firewall? It's known to cause stability problems because it's ****e

What other drivers could I try uninstalling along with the display ones. Ones that might be causing a Conflict. Could I be getting Someconflict with the Harddrive the fact that it was taken from the Dell machine. I know that all the Components are working so I wouldnt think its a ram issue, Would hardly boot into safe would then i think

You just upgraded from a Dell with the HD, DVD and RAM from the old machine. Did you perform a fesh install of XP on the new box or is it trying to boot from the old dell installation?

Different board / chipsets / processor etc will always need a clean reinstall, gfx / nic / etc you usually can get away with.

sounds like its booting from the old dell xp installation, the new board / processor will require a re-install / repair

uninstall all the nvidia drivers. It could be any of them if in fact it is those that are causing the problem. The HDs shouldn't matter if they are Dell or any other make or model.

Install Windows as normal and when asked to format the drive select leave file system intact (no changes)

    method 2 on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/

You will need an original XP disc as the dell disc more than likely is preloaded with tons of dell crud.

in windows explorer, go to options/folder options. make sure the show hidden files is ticked and that the 'hide operating system files' in unchecked.

now go to c:\documents and settings\oldusername, highlight everything (exclude the ntuser.* files) and move everything to c:\documents and settings\newusername

you dont need all folders like temp, internet cache etc, but seeing as you're moving it on the same disk doesnt matter that much.

log off and back on (or restart) and everything should be back :D

What a mess, I have stuff all over the place..Links arent working etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 640 ✭✭✭CraggyIslander

what links arent working? whats all over the place? be more specific

under the c:\documents and settings\newuser folder the following subfolders are important:

the 'favourites' folder holds all your bookmarks
the 'desktop' folder is everything u see on ur desktop
the 'local settings' and 'application data' are for program configs like outlook (express) / firefox / adobe / etc.
the 'my documents' folder is all your data files

Although the repair option when u reinstalled windows is supposed to leave installed programs alone it does sometimes change their registry entries. If an app has stopped working, reinstall it to the same place and should be grand.
