in the device manager it reads it as a cd-rom and ive updated the firmware to the latest version but no luck, i put a dvd in, it takes about 5 minutes for my computer to even comprehend that theres a dvd in there and then it plays for 5 seconds and then hangs, i dont know what to do, help please

Are you running Windows XP? What is the make and model of your DVDRW?

If you've only bought it a week ago bring it back for a refund or replacement ASAP. Your drive shouldn't fail that soon.

does it read data cd's? If not then I'd guess a fault. Easy way to test this is to insert the Windows XP CD into the drive and restart the PC. If your PC is set to boot from CD-ROm it should attempt to read the CD and start the installation (which you can just abort).

If it read data CD's but cant read audio then there is s driver controlling that but it should be installed by default on every Windows operating system. Check out this link to Microsofts KBase http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?catalog=LCID%3d1033&query=audio%20cd%20play&adv=&spid=3221&range= particulary the second and fifth listed cases.
    hope this helps

Atapi.sys is the basic driver for CD/DVD drives in Windows, it's there by default no need to load it. Did you get a driver disk with this drive and did you load it?

You shouldn't need any driver for the DVDRW as they are installed by Windows. I would just get it replaced, OP. Where did you get the firmware from, official site?

Had Problems with a Philips drive myself a few months ago, only way I could get it to work was to isolate it on a controller on it's own, did'nt like sharing ide controller with another Philips drive!

Hehe thats a bit wacky, in that case, try putting the DVDRW as the master drive on the secondary IDE channel and see if its any different, worth a go. :)

Won't matter if it's master or cable select once it's on the controller on it's own, Just checked my drive and it's a philips 1640, same family, so could be same fix.
