Why not just use a crossover cable?does your pc and your laptop not have ethernet ports

    No, it probably wouldn't work
What type of modem is it btw, is it a broadband DSL modem or an external Dial Up modem?

    broadband

yea, the cable is probably not a crossover. You could pick up a crossover for a couple of euro in a computer shop. A crossover cable is wired slightly differently to a normal cable, so the modem cable wont work.

That cable could well be a cross-over cable. I have two broadband router/modems and both were supplied with cross-over cables. Try to ping one computer from the other. You'll probably need to set an IP address on both manually as there'll be no DHCP to assign the addresses.

How does that USB networking actually work? Does it use TCP/IP as well? If that is so, maybe you have to set up IP addresses for that as you would with an ethernet LAN.

    I stand corrected

Think you're going slightly offcourse with the replies lads. OP has this.

He's having problems installing it and getting it running. Nothing to so with crossover cables or tcp/ip networking.

Does your PC have USB1 or USB2, and is the cable USB1 or USB2?

it was mentioned that it was a USB 2.0 cable..... so its safe to assume it is...

afaik it will work with 1.1 ports, just at reduced transfer speeds.

Try removing the usb ports. Start->Control Panel->System

Click on hardware, then device manager. Remove everything from Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Then restart PC. Then reinstall s/w and plug in usb cable.

IMPORTANT: what versions of Windows do you have? From experience, I've found that alot of the low cost stuff are only compatible with XP, or maybe 2000, but not 98, or ME.
