effective aza dosage

    Hello,

Just a query regarding optimal dosage of aza/6-mp in cases of crohns or UC
When I last looked at this a few years back there were disagreements amongst many as to the correct dosage. It was given in dosages anywhere from 1mg-3mg/kg per day. In the US a test done by the Prometheus Laboratories was available which was argued to have accurate indicators whether or not the drug was metabolised correctly and whether it was an effective dosage.

Now a while back a friend of mine, a doctor, told me that it was reported somewhere that it could be seen as negligent by a doctor to perscribe this drug without a follow-up blood test to test whether the dose was optimal. (I'm not talking the WBC here)...

So can one of the docs here tell me if these tests are available in Ireland, the cost thereof, and if not available why not - and if available why aren't most patients being offered them?
    Is the testing useful?

    Thanks :D

    I'm on Imuran (Aza) @ 250mg (5 x 50mg) per day.
This would work out at around 1.5mg/kg in my case.

I have blood tests every 3 months- Full blood count and Liver function test. I was originally started on a lower dose (150mg/d) but as it had no detrimental effect on white cell count I was incremented up to 250 (and may possibly be put higher).

Blood tests can be done anywhere- they cost about Euro 70 per go (I have more than the above two tests, but I'm damned if I can think what they are.....)

I was put on Imuran by my consultant (Prof. Dermot O'Donoghue from St. Vincents Private).

Note: I'm a long term Crohn's sufferer (have had surgery 4 times so far and counting......)
