Ive heard that if you buy from stores in America like B&H, you will most likely get stung for tax...

Now is does this come on your credit card bill or do you have to pay the courier?

it will be cash on delivery to the courier , and as well as VAT you may have to pay a fine for non declaration and a fee for handling to the courier.

For me , a 310 euro order , had additional charges of 63 for VAT , 18 euro handling fee , and 70 euro fine from C&E.

Bringing up a grand total of 151 to be paid on delivery. It was still considerably cheaper than buying here , Items in question were over 600 euro here. So I didnt care that much.

Yep, I just bought two lenses worth over 500, taxes from Hong Kong, it totalled 700...but works out being 300 cheaper than here, and 150 cheaper than European outlets!

it depends on how it gets posted. If you use a courier like UPS or Fedex, they automatically add the duty and VAT charges and they won't give you the item until you pay up.
You could get it posted through USPS (US Post Office) and get it insured and get a tracking number. The Post Office do not add the duty or VAT, so unless your package gets stopped in C&E, you won't have to pay anything. The only downside is relying on not one, but two of the least reliable postal services in the developed world

The post office used to be a better route regarding collection of duty and vat (as in they were much less likely to get stopped) but the last two parcels I had sent via the post office got stopped by customs.

I was thinking of buying a camera from www.buybestdigitalcamera.com a Japanese site. They offer free shipping and in their FAQ they will reimburse your tax or customs charges. It appears to good to be through has anyone used this site?
