Night Guard

My younger brother has bruxism / grinding of teeth at night. He is actually splintering the tips of some of his upper front teeth he is biting so heavily.

Dentist has recommended a night guard. It sounds like a high spec gumshield to stop further damage.

Quoted €300 for the entire job. I think he will have 2 visits. A short one for an impression and a longer session for fitting.

Is €300 reasonable for this ?

Also, saw ads recently on TV for some new product from SENSODYNE that seems to help repair damage caused by acid erosion / reflux. Anyone know if this is any good ?

I hope not. I was told at my last dentist visit that i grind my teeth (i do it either unknown to myself or in my sleep) apparently the incisors should have ridges and be uneven or something and i've worn the surface down and its all smooth and flat. The dentist is gonna see if its gotten worse or anything at my next visit and see if i need a guard. I hope it's not €300

I got a night guard from my dentist last year - it cost €100 for the two sessions. €300 sounds expensive, but AFAIK there are different types of guards so maybe I just got the 'entry level' guard.

You're absolutely right, there are both soft and hard guards. Also, guards may have extra features like wire-formed retaining clips, etc. €100 is very reasonable, and I assume is a soft one, seeing I couldn't pay my technician to make a hard one for that!

There's soft guards and hard resin guards. I wear a hard one and €300 sounds like an ok price to me - thats about what I paid for my current one. The dentist will have to trim the guard so it fits your brother's mouth - it can take a while to get it right. I had to wear the guard and grind it with bits of paper that have ink on them - it made a mark on the guard and the dentist filed it down so it fit properly. Also Sensodyne is good but in the last few months I've switched to Blanx Bio Repair and I find it better - it's also better value for money you get twice as much for about €3.50 - I get it in Boots - they always have it on offer! ;) Also a word to the wise - when the guard gets loose go back to the dentist and get them to tighten it - I tried to do a diy job on my first one and snapped it in half!!

He got the job done. Final cost was €300.

Two sessions involved. The first session was 30 minutes to get a cast. The second session lasted just over an hour as there was a lot of trimming and adding to be done to fine tune it for a proper fit.

Yes, it was the hard resin type.

Apparently, it does not not stop the grinding but does stop further damage being done to the affected teeth.

    Hey Guys,

If you are looking for low-priced & high quality night guards, there are plenty providers online. There is one provider called, "TotalGard" which offers night guards and sports guards. They are fair with prices and their products alleviate teeth grinding, teeth clenching, and bruxism. I would definitely recommend checking them out, if you're scratching your head over this issue. Good luck!

€300 sounds rather excessive. 30 mins to take impressions?!?

My own dentist charged me €150.

I found getting a guard on the upper set to be a lot more effective.
