There's an article about old sweets, crisps etc. in the magazine section of today's independent, Macaroon bars, Tayto, Red lemonade etc.

One thing I found hillarious is there's a picture of an ad for HB ice cream and in it there's a picture of a "Golly Bar". Not very politically correct! And the ad doesn't even look that old.

Yeah I read that article earlier and really enjoyed it. i picked up on the Golly bar thing too, but i was more shocked to be reminded of just how little ice creams cost back then. I'm not at all old at 19, but even i rememer sub 20p loop-the-loops. Really makes me feel we get ripped off these days. And bring back the Mint Choc ice cream I say!

3p. Cornettos were a luxury item when I was a lad, very rare that I would get one of those. :)

Same here. The first one I got was as a treat coming from hospital after getting the top of one of my fingers sutured back on. I had cut it off earlier. I was about 9 or 10.

3 penny Tayto bags were mid 70s maybe earlier. I remember the cheapest crisps were King, not as good as Tayto.

Less lip from you young folk! ;) Yep, Cornettos were launched in the mid to late 80s (I'm thinking about '86) and they were a major luxury since 50p was considered a huge amount to spend on a confectionary item.

i remember when the magnums were lauched with the extortionate price of
80p , i dont think you can get a choc ice for less than a euro now.

never really was fond of cornettos, mainly because they felt like a rip off. you'd get way more in a real ice cream cone that you'd get out of a van. but i miss the golly bar like hell, no chance of it comming back though too un PC . kinda like the KIA ORA adds that used to be on telly (remember " i'll be your dog" !) or UM BONGO. :D

Cornettos were launched the year I was born, 1976.

I remember seeing the advert with the guy singing on the gondola when I was three or four.

Wow! Could have sworn I remembered them coming out as a new item. Maybe they were repackaged or something.

The shop in school sold Taytos for 3p. That was in 1977. Snax were 2p - same as the bus fare!!!

Probably, are they not just called "icebergers" or something now? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

nah, icebergers are the one thats like a sandwich. legend in their own right, never could actually figure out what the hell they're made of. presumed its some kind of composite biscuit in the end. kinda half bourbon and half digestive with a wedge of ice cream in the middle.

poor old golly bars long gone :(

They are still called Golly Bar but are in a plastic wrap and not the blue folded paper cover that had gollywogs on them.

Anyone remember Kojak ice-pops? I remember having one when my Auntie bought her newly-built house in River Forest in Leixlip and we were walking back to my house in Lucan.

They were a black coloured, flavoured ice-pop. Looking back now, I wonder were they called Kojak because they were black?

I also remember buying a packet of taytos for 3 and a half pence but not 3 pence. Late 1970's inflation huh?

No, I don't remember the Kojak ice-pop. The only black one I can remember was the Dracula one. It was black on the outside and red ice (or blood as I used to imagine!) in the middle.

I remember Tayto for 4d and Perri for 3d. That's old pence, so you could get 60 packs of Tayto or 80 packs of Perri for £1. But who ever had a £1? 6d was my limit then.

4d? Hagar, you're surely not my parents' age?!
