hi ,im thinking of competing in f5 next year and im getting a test in one in a couple of weeks would anyone be able to tell me what to expect of these cars as i am new to single seaters. also i was wondering what a front runner budget would be like if you were with a team 40,50k or less thanks to any replies

I had 2 F5 rces today (on pole for both, finished 2nd in both :D ) out of 5 cars so dont cheer just yet:o ., and im wrecked. Theres a thread further down with some pics. They are very tough physically to drive, but good craic.
The gearbox takes a bit of getting used to, with it being sequential.

Front runningbudget is nowhere near 40k.
Heres a rough working per race weekend. - this is running it yourself. there are 5 weekends with 2 races per weekend.
Entry 300 euro (2 races same day)
Test day - 130 for half day, 230 for a full day.
Petrol, about 80 euro per weekend (test and race)
Tyres 800 euro a set and they are limited-- You are limited to 3 sets per year. So thats 3 sets for 10 races. You cant buy extra sets to test, so when you go testing you use your valuable race slicks.
This is usually where other classes spiral out of control budgetwise, as lads with lots of money can test all the time, cos tyres are unlimited.
Formula Ford 1600 used to be like this, but they have introduced tyre limits for this year.
Doing a deal with a team really depends on what type of deal you want - arrive and drive, or whatever. I run mine myself, its just labour intensive, checking every nut/bolt after every run. Ask any questions as Ill probably be able to guide you. I run 2 guys off Boards in Formula Vee too..

At the moment im racing karts in senior max .But they were always playing second fiddle if you know what i mean so i never spent the crazy amounts of money front runners pay at the end of the day there are only karts(where money really speaks if you want to win).so i was expecting a high budget like that.If i am going to race single seaters i want to do it right and with a team arrive and drive package simply because i wont be able to set the car up to be able to win and it would be to time consuming at home. would you know how much a package like that would cost roughly? just to know how much sponsers to get .haha if i can get any!! And are wings only cosmetic or can you feel them push the car down or most importantly were you happy with the cars overall performence:)

They are very fast, and turn in very sharp. Im undecided as to wing effectiveness, but they are very curved underneath, so they must do something.
Leastone Race cars Paul Heavey would really be the man to talk to about a price on an arrive and drive, or when/if I get my car running properly this year I would run 2 next year. I gotta learn this year though.
I had some water leaks over the weekend, but nothing serious.

i was taking to paul a couple of weeks ago about organising a test so it will all go from there hopefully.is the 3 tyre limit only when the championship starts or can you test before the champ starts to get use to the car

Its from season start, but there can be exemptions, such as a new lad joining half way through. He has the regs well covered and thought out.

A little off topic.. but where the hell do you guys get that sort of money to pump into a hobby????? 40k - 50k????????

I know sponsorship etc does help but I'm stumped.. struggling to get a few grand together just to go karting.. and Ive a fairly decent job..

Is there a secret fund/society/branch of the illuminati that you're all members of or something???

    drink=bad M'Kay? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Kersh

Lol :D:D thats exactly it Souper. If you dont drink you save literally hundreds a month, theres never more than 2 races a month usually.
But really toxic, I work 9-5, I instruct at weekends , So its 24-7 for me.
Budgets are nowhere near 50k in clubman racing in Ireland.

If you can run yourself rather than a team then you can afford it most of the time. Basically if you don't blow engines or stay away from the barriers then you will survive.

About three seasons ago i spent about 50k in ff as i had two complete wreckers and 5 engines let go.Last year i spent around 10k and this year with more running in the UK i'll spend around 15k.

If i had a team run me then i reckon between renting car, entries and other consumibles about 1-1.5k per weekend??? could be wrong.

Before commiting to anything test a ff as well, there are loads of teams there you will accomadate you.

Mind you with Leastones incentive package F5 should take off within a year or so..

    Why only 5 cars???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Kersh

Well there was 8, One guy forgot to turn his waterpump on, and blew his engine, another let oil out and never refilled it, and threw a rod out. And one just isnt out right now.
2 others , inc Paul heaveys own car are just about ready and will be out at the Park.
So basically a lack of spare engines cos people not watching/maintaining them. There are 4 more engines on the way from UK next week, so that should help.

Ahh jeeez lads, I wouldnt spend a few hundred on drink in 6 months.. I'm a lightweight when it comes to drink and most I would spend is about €30-€40 on drink on a night out.. :D

hmmm... need to have a serious look at my finances methinks

The cheapest place to start is probably either the Uno class or the Vee class. An Uno can be bought for as little as 1,250euro and last year's championship winner was just sold for 2ish, Vees are slightly dearer.
The Formula 5 Leastones look and sound great so hopefully a few more will come out and we'll see some great racing.
@Michael, from a karters point of view, it might be worth having a chat with Cheryl Murphy, she tested an F5 recently and went well, according to Paul Heavey...........
