Mandy v Bunty

They were both brilliant but, for me, Mandy wins by a margin. Although Bunty did have The Four Marys. Those stories were so brilliant. Seriously, the ideas were absolutely top-notch - just like kids TV back then. Do such comics even exist anymore? And remember there were monthly book-things featuring just one story? One of those was under the name Debbie but I don't recall any Debbie comic. There was also Judy, which was great too and there was Nikki, which was for the slightly older girl - it had a problem page and such. And the annuals at Christmas were the best ever! Great days!
Guys, if you had a sneak peak at your sister's comics, don't be afraid to admit it. My brother would hijack my Mandy every week. I was 10 - so, wait a minute, that would have made him 16. Weirdo.

We used to get them all. I prefered Mandy over Bunty. Then Bunty merged with Suzy, Mandy merged with Judy and I think they all merged together after that! Don't remember Debbie but I'm sure I saw a new Mandy annual last year.

Twinkle was deadly - remember the cut-out outfit every week? But that was for really 'ickle girls. Bunty etc was for the more mature female (around 9 up ;)).

Ah yes, Valda! The woman with eternal life and youth, who would often recall her adventures from centuries past. She was in Mandy.

Mental! Thought my friend's dad was funny because he watched Home and Away. Ah well, different strokes for different folks. My cousin used to get the glossy, updated Bunty a few years ago (late 90s or thereabouts). What a load of cack - hardly any stories and loads about make-up, clothes, boys, pop stars etc. Come on! It's for 10-year-olds!

I was bought Bunty for a little bit but my mother soon realised that I was a Beano girl through and through so she gave up on the girly ones :)

They were both great, but i think Mandy wins out. The annuals were fab, I loved them

One thing, though, there was an unbelievable amount of grimness to the stories. I mean, a lot of them were concerned with, frankly, child abuse. Kids being sent to live with cruel aunts and uncles or foster parents; horrible orphanages where they worked as slaves, children's homes that were really factories. Bizarre! Yet we lapped it up. I think there may be morbid inclinations to pre-teen girls. Like, when I was 12, EVERYONE had to read Flowers in the Attic - a book about child abuse and incest. I wouldn't be able to look at stuff like that now.

I prefered Mandy, but then again my name is Amanda so I was a little biased.:o

However I loved Valda, so it would be Mandy anyway. I hated Angel, the one about the rich girl who was diagnosed with a terminal illness at 16 so she faked her own death and took her jewel to help the street orphans. Her story was always told through some modern girl who thought she was poor/unlucky finding some of her diary and learning to be a better person through learning about bloody Angel.

I don't remember if she originated in Mandy or Judy but she was in M&J. Even though they finally killed her in the last issue of which ever comic she was from, they swiftly brought her back. I hate, hate, hated her.

Simpson, or Simpy, the scholarship girl. And Raddy was actually a countess.
