What to do???

Ok, I want to upgrade my pc.
    Current Spec:
    • Amd AthlonXP 2500+ 1.83Ghz
    • 768mb DDR400 ram
    • 300gb hard disk
    • 128mb ati radeon 9800pro
    • DVD burner & CD burner
    • 17inch CRT monitor

I'm thinking of getting a machine with a Intel Core2Duo E6600, 1-2Gb Ram(depends on available funds), Point of View GeForce 7900GT 256MB PciExpress graphics card and 300gb hdd.
But Intel announced the other day that they are bringing quad cores closer from early 2007 to late 2006, and now I'm not sure whether to wait for the quad cores or buy a dual core and sometime in 2007 get a new motherboard and quadcore cpu???
Any ideas? Or anyone in the same boat?

    Thanks,
    al.

I think that we all share your concern of whether to upgrade today or tomorrow? That's a tuff call.

sure there is always 'something around the corner' - upgrade now if your needs are greater than your current system...you never know what will happen in a few months time, it could end up being pushed back again!!

Im in the exact same boat. Or was in the same boat, I took the plunge and got an A64 3800 single core for €150 after much deliberation over whether to go for conroe or get a cheap A64. Havent build the rig yet though. It'll do what I want for the time being and I'll wait and see what amd does.

I feel you pain though, there will alwys be something in coming out in a few months. Right now theres conroe about to be released, and then am2 opterons, and then dx10 cards, and then vista and then k8l and then quad core cpus, the list goes on and on. You'll be waiting forever to upgrade :)

So I guess my advice is to just take the plunge. With an e6600 and 7900gt I doubt you'll be disappointed anyway.

Edit: ^ Beaten to the "there's always something around the corner" argument :)

My advise is "Go for it now if you have the money".
Had 2 make the same decision myself..........Who knows, in 2007 when quadcore is released Amd will prob annnounce 8core cpu's in the future and so on.......its the never ending story. You'll only have a state of the art rig for a short time before the next upgrade.

Do these quad core cpus need a new socket??

Thanks for all your advice. Very much appreciated. Thinking about just going for it with a conroe and then in late 07 upgrade to quadcores if I feel I need it.

    Thanks again,
    al. :)

    edit:
Do these quad core cpus need a new socket??
Not sure about that. I have heard the quad cores are two dual cores put together but that's all I know...

If you're looking to save some moolah on a new graphics card, I'll be selling my 7800GTX in the next 2 weeks..

As for the CPU, don't wait. Waiting is pointless in this industry. If you wait until the quad cores hit - a new somethingorother will be announced.
I'd say go for Conroe now, and upgrade if you need to (as you said).
Tbh I've a bad feeling about these quad core CPUs. My Evil Sense(tm) is tingling, but not in the good way.
